In the game and in the show the initial infection is NOT airborne. All done through bites / naturally through the fungus getting in your system

The game and show deviate in the later years. the game has Spores, which are only in enclosed areas with infected that have been there for multiple years. In the show, these spores do not exist so it is not airborne.
