You guys keep making this excuse but at this point in the game I definitely felt an understanding and attachment for the characters
I do think Pedro is doing a decent job though. He's the best part of the show by far.

We literally see his daughter get murdered in front of his face
Then he's a drinking husk of a human being that shows signs of warmth but still acts distant towards Ellie cause you know he's thinking about his daughter when he sees her. It's not rocket science lmao this s*** is right there
