What I was getting at earlier with 28 Days later comparison ( I also said this originally when game launched too). I think the story and characters of first game are good. Is it Best of all time cancel all other games good ? To each their own the plot itself isn't that wild but the characters are well done

the characters are some of the best of all time in gaming, cause gaming usually has ass writing and stories, especially pre-2013.
but film and television has some of the best characters ever already, so i wonder if joel and ellie will stand out to people who arent fans of the game
hope they do, need a naughty dog win

This is what I strongly dislike. Some people I don't know if y'all young or what act like gaming had s***, unemotional stories before The Last of Us. Yes there was some s*** don't get me wrong but there were plenty of concepts and stories that were emotionally moving that didn't focus on realism or writing as much
I guess thats what truly bothers me if anything about the Last of Us is people acting like Gaming as a medium simply was child like or garbage before its existence
. Yes it is well written Yes it was an accessible realistic story with well written characters, great graphics and gameplay but don't knock everything that came before it and after it
There were plenty of gaming stories that were better than some tv shows and movies both before and after the last of us

yea pre-2013 was crazy i'd prolly say pre 2005ish.
it's prolly just me but imo stories in games are honestly usually generic asf including the first Last of Us. the characters save that story but the plot is mid.
most other games i play for fun gameplay and atmosphere and iconic characters are there but the plots and stories never have me going "holy f***" like movies or tv

I think of Bioshock, Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Witcher 2, Half Life 2, Bioshock Infinite, Alan Wake
like yes they are all different highs but when I call The Last of Us a movie game I don't mean it because of cutscenes so much as its similar to 28 Days later. Mocapping huge . Acting of scenes. Blockbuster like feel. Someone could watch all of the cutscenes of certain stories and the story would connect versus some games what they do in the game , cutscenes and agency play a larger part
This is just to me personally not a knock

I feel you
also real for Alan Wake, that's prolly in my top 10 all time

I played a ton of single player stories before TLOU (Bioshock, Shadow of the Colossus, Uncharted, Witcher, MGS, God of War, ME2, Arkham Knight, RDR)
The difference isn’t simply realism. It’s just that it’s clear I’m playing video games with these stories, where I have to keep fighting a new boss after I beat the first one. The stories are structured for “here’s the next mission we have to do” rather than an actual story centered on building characters and the world. Uncharted 1/2 does that as well to a degree and often ends up feeling like a rejected Indiana Jones plot overextended for a video game.
It’s not really about realism, it’s the fact that TLOU 1 and 2 are the first and only games where I’d say the writing and storytelling actually trumps a lot of genre storytelling found in tv and movies (part 2 a lot moreso than part 1). It’s not to say there aren’t great single player video games, but for me the greatness comes from playing it as a game, not the story by itself.
im playin it's good but at this point i feel like we seen this exact story so many times in so many different ways, that im curious how the audience that's never played the games recieves this show when there's no interactive aspect
Yeah this is a very fair point and I think most gaming fans don’t really understand anything about storytelling but TLOU2 is a far more compelling story than the first one. The first game to a degree also suffers from standard video game plotting of “people on a journey, have to do this mission and then the next mission”
There is great character development though and obviously you get amazing moments but it’s no where near how dynamic and ambitious a story TLOU2 was where you consistently were seeing new perspectives, new groups and characters to learn about, and seeing consistent thematic growth as a story
Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker, who originated the roles of main characters Ellie and Joel in the games, take on major parts in the context of the series. Johnson is seen briefly in the teaser holding a crying baby. EW has learned that she plays Anna, a pregnant woman, alone and on the run, who must give birth under the most terrifying of circumstances. Baker plays James, a senior member of a group of settlers who must fight to keep their community alive in the face of increasingly brutal odds.
Super curious to see how this is received.
Wonder if it’ll manage to get proper acclaim, or if it’ll be seen as more of a pretty good series, just not top tier prestige television.
