Ngl as I played the original. And the many times I replayed it it wasn’t even a point of debate back then. It was all the assumption that the vaccine would have worked lol. I always believed that’s what Joel was stopping. The vaccine. I never once second guessed the vaccine. This wasn’t even a point of discussion until the second game

I agree I never second guessed the vaccine but after the fireflies knock you out and do this against your will you do end the game questioning them. Even by end of game 2 if they got ellie and the vaccine there is no real trust they would use it on anyone but themselves.
