They were definitely inspired by Neil writing an original story with Last of Us HBO
I had to get one more Retcon joke in before the gamers hit you with it all week

POV: el chapo hasn’t seen ending and all accounts say it remains same and not retconned

in Neil’s words in 2013 the game was written under assumption vaccine would work in an interview with ign 1 week prior to games release
Its retconned but its okay cause the many small retcons they make will help better set up season 2

LIES
At the moment I don't have the particular interview (because it's 10 years old buried by Last of Us 2 links in search engines), but I do have the following two ending interviews which infer the vaccine's success.
Kotaku 2013: https://www.kotaku.com.au/2013/06/the-last-of-us-climactic-moments-could-have-been-very-different/
“As for the whole ending… I’ve heard you talk [in your review] about how some of the plot points are clichéd, and the one that probably bugs us the most is Ellie being immune. And the only reason that’s in there is so you could get that choice at the end. There’s this progression of character for Joel, and how far is he willing to go for Ellie? It progresses from like, willing to put his life on the line, willing to put his friends on the line, and eventually he’s willing to put his soul on the line, and he’s willing to sacrifice all of humanity. And at the end you could argue that last conversation, he’s even willing to put his relationship with Ellie on the line. In order to protect her."
“So that was always there for that purpose. It was never there because we’re interested in saving the world or curing Mankind; it was just to get that progression of his character, or rather, the progression of both characters, because it becomes really interesting for Ellie at the end there, too.”

Not trying to argue lol just providing some reading before you say retcon when it’s not true

I am Joking
I always thought it was a good chance and didn't care if Joel and or ellie died at the end of the journey. I personally would have liked a sequel to be anthology and never see them again but I see the value of returning to them.
Anyways
Tonight
do you think finale winds up top 3 episodes of season?
Idk maybe. If not not a bad thing. This season has been super strong for me so top 3 is asking a lot! All I know is I know the plot points and I love the plot points and I can’t wait to see them adapted

Kroniic reasonable. What will you fill your sundays with without football or last of us?
