Yeah this was a new addition
Not sure if I like it tbh
It’s a CLEVER thing to say to cover your tracks, like Joel probably would say that because it’s a great excuse but idk I liked the more drastic lie of them all still being alive. Made the tension feel a bit more palpable and urgent
I’m already getting in heated debates with friends who are experiencing this for the first time lol
Where do they side
they going to roast the f*** out of you when they see 2's story if this is majorly controversial for them
A take I have that seems to be hot for people:
People give Joel too much leeway in conversations about what they would be willing to do for their own kids. Part of the difficult nuance at play here is Ellie is not Joel’s kid. People - especially parents - project themselves into Joel’s shoes and always place their a***yzing of it as themselves and their kid. But Ellie IS NOT Joel’s daughter. They havnt known eachother for a calendar year. Ellie has completely given Joel’s life light and purpose again. And I’m not trying to downplay his genuine love for her. But part of Joel’s trauma experience is this flawed mix up in his head of Ellie and Sarah.
And we get to see this DOES end up bothering Ellie later on.
I just kind of get tired of "Joel did the right thing because that's what I would do for my kid"… like okay? Sick, good for you. But that isnt his kid.
Ellie played into being his daughter like figure. Like Yes she pretends to be against it because she knows he lied, but she was fine with the attachment

to be fair all of them still being alive only made so much sense because Ellie is meant to be shown close to Marlene since Marlene is her closest thing to a mom. So why logically would she never see Marlene again unless Marlene was dead. Marlene has known ellie much longer than Joel

Not denying that - but the fact of that matter is that Ellie is not Joels daughter and I grow tired of people trying to use their own kids as a 1:1 for supporting Joel as a mass murderer lol

its something sony milked with god of war and last of us and will surely milk again. Making games for adults with kids. They want people to project or relate to their characters so its inevitable yes obviously they are not blood but they do play that role for each other

Well one guy texting me is my friend but he has the actual worst takes so it’s to be taken with a massive grain of salt and he’s going full into the “Joel did the most moral option” take which gives me a literal brain aneurysm

lol again I told y'all with how clear the fireflies were shown as terrorist willing to pipe bomb civilians
1. Marlene comical villainy of "here take Ellies knife we woke her up and talked to her but we didn't tell her the surgery will kill her"
2. Marlene saying "we will distribute the vaccine " when again they are a terrorist organization so they not going to give it to everyone
how they presented everything Joel is in the "right"
Especially in a season where infected haven't really been the problem most of the show as much as humanity.

Idk if the “blood daughter” aspect matters much . With everything they went through i don’t know if her being his technical daughter would change much about the perception people have on their relationship . Most people are fully aware of your point when they project this situation but i don’t think it’s a big factor for most people . Blood daughter or not majority of us views the dynamic as a father/daughter dynamic anyways. In a world like “the last of us” that is practically his kid by the end of the first part.

what renbop said. I also don't really think it bothers Ellie even based on what we see in game 2.

Nah like I feel you 100% and I get it. Of course their relationship is paternal and of course Ellie plays into the daughter thing - I have no issues with how it plays out, or how it’s interpreted, or anything of the sorts.
I’m just saying, I get so tired of the “well that’s what I’d do for my kid” line. I just think it’s a boring / lazy / nuance-lacking a***ysis of if all.
Like they try to make it seem like
1. this lie would bother ellie
2. Ellie doesnt like the father daughter relationship
3. Ellie wanted her life to mean something and would sacrifice herself if she had the choice
but she literally just saw the worst of humanity that can exist in anyone in david, kathleen and all of these people. Like yes a Sam and Henry would benefit from the vaccine but would it even make it to them? A Riley would benefit and it would make it to her but it wouldn't make it to everyone. Its still a horrific world of humans and yes I get not wanting infected in every episode but in this season humanity was a much exponentially bigger enemy than infected even more so than the game 1 balance.

they even kind of say this in podcast though like Neil says when they playtested everyone with children said "Joel did nothing wrong"
Like trying to have a nuanced real break down with Joel’s decision with someone and they like have a wall up and just keep saying “well that’s what I’d do for my kid and any parent who says otherwise is s***” - shut the f*** up, we’re talking about a TV show and a fake character in a fake apocalypse. Have a nuanced conversation with me about the characters decisions and stop using it as an excuse to let me know how incredible of a protector can be

lol cause the game 1 and 2 story are all about that level of projection

I have a daughter and I think saying “Joel did nothing wrong” is some dumb ass s***.
If I had to would I kill for my daughter? Yes. Do I love her more than anything on the f***ing planet? Yes. Can I watch a show where a guy goes full mass shooting in order to preserve his own relationship and say “wow that’s f***ed up, but I get it.”, yes.
I just hate people act like the 2 are mutually exclusive.

its a mass shooting of terrorist. People they spend time throughout the show showing as evil and incompetent.
no one is watching 24 like "Jack Bauer is wild for killing all those terrorist"
no one even if the the terrorist have a good motive, cure, stop American empire.
that is again why I said throughout season they would have helped to show more fireflies so ending would be more grey or more marlene so we more got that she was like ellies mom and this decision was tough
or lightly more infected so we got how much humanity would improve without infected
I got laughed out of the thread
I told y'all the ending wouldn't be grey enough and y'all were like "its like that in the game". I mentioned the audiolog and if they were setting a game 2 if anything they would want to retcon is more fireflies , marlene, vaccine viability and possibly even make ellie have a choice in the matter
y'all said " LMFAO LAST OF US 2 GOAT GAME "
so now I just sit back and
If y'all think the audience reacted differently than you expected for this ending wait til they see the story of 2

friendly debate isn't calling someone a dumbass and saying "LMFAO " when they say "show definitely needs more of this if ifs goal is to be grey or ambiguous". The debate or discussion in thread stopped being friendly when people would just start calling each other dumbasses, dimwits, brain dead
then be like "wow thread so toxic "

Did I ever do or say this? Again I’m speaking to you but you keep addressing other people while you’re quoting me, if you’re gonna talk to me talk to me but don’t keep dropping these generalized nods at some greater group of people cause I ain’t beefed with you

all last of us 2 fanboys are the same
this post is a joke
but really general audience has no reason to view Joel as a villain lol
they have seen characters do much worse in tv and film and not even be considered a villain. The only arguably foul kill was Marlene but since Marlene says "we woke up ellie and just didnt tell her the operation would kill her or give her any choice here goes a knife" she was made evil enough
