if you like the beatles, beach boys, big star, phil spector, sharp pins or other laurel canyon type s*** tap in when it drops
solid album, that mean to me song sounds like it’s bordering on parody though
I shouldn't have read this post & then listened to this song before playing the album
Overall they've grown as artists over the years but they are still also prone to heavy biting

What makes that song so egregious or tacky to you in a way that is worse than the other songs?
A song or two gave me that vibe but that one didn’t much. I don’t really like the song but listening back now, can’t really pick out what you’re picking out on it that goes into parody tier. Curious what that is

just some of the lyrics lol, it sounds like one of those songs Brian Wilson would try to record and get s*** on by the other beach boys

Was gonna post this song when I replied earlier
Saw em live in 2016 because a friend liked them, hadn't kept up with em since but the 'parody' or heavy blatant stylistic biting was an issue for me back, gave em a play after hearing em on Thundercat's new album & even that track gave me the same 'oh so we just biting old styles huh
' feeling
(me in the thundercat thread a month ago)
Surprisingly What Is Left To Say didn't hit me as hard on first listen as it seems to have hit others, it leans a bit too heavy into revivalism for me - which makes sense as that was a major critique I had of the Lemon Twigs during their initial run surrounding their first album. It slips my tongue at the moment but the Wurlizter/Rhodes opening sounds as if it came from another classic song which I can't quite place at the moment.
They don't bite all the time but the biting + their kinda forced retro rock fashion stylings & general visual presentation make the biting feel extra egregious
I was much more into the last album. The two I mentioned are my highlights.
I feel like they have stepped down twice since everything harmony
All three albums are good but that album perfected this sound and the full bodies of the last two albums haven’t held up as strong

Yeah I can't even get into them for this reason.
Accusing them of biting is pretty amusing, since they’re admittedly blatant revivalists. They’re obsessed with that post Sgt. Peppers/Pet Sounds era of sunshine/psych/baroque pop music, as well as 70’s glam, power pop, and soft rock. They’ve studied the material so heavily, and are such talented songwriters, arrangers, and producers, that they easily put out music that feels like it’s always existed. They’re simply adopting a comfortable, familiar aesthetic, but the chords, melodies, and the combinations of them are all their own. I think people have a limited scope on their influences. At this point, they’re more so looking at the forgotten pop and rock bands from that era. Stuff like this…
