Indescribably Bergmanian, with spices of Murnau, Dreyer and even a splash of Lovecraft sprinkled in. The 1.19:1 ratio provides an inescapable box that unlike ‘The Witch’ perfectly encapsulates the cinematic world and thematic nuances that are particularly inescapable for the viewer and our deuteragonists. A stepping stone for modern directors to pull into the goodie bags and pockets of past auteur and pick and choose which pieces they like, as if Halloween candy, to perfect their kino and satiate their taste buds accordingly. While people say Parasite is this years best effort, from—a creative standpoint and historically groundbreaking one, unequivocally that title belongs to Eggers’ sophomore effort and perhaps we won’t see anything as ambitious until he descends again and decides us petty mortals are worthy of his brooding Nosferatu magnum opus. It spiritually succeeds the likes of Guinea Pig 6: Mermaid in the Manhole (1988) with an influential coating of The Seventh Seal (1957). There are endless things to say about this film but simply put, when the hype has been removed from the masses, its long-standing influence is going to shake the modern art house industry. Especially horror.

There is definitely some Greek influence. Namely that of Poseidon. I think that much can be surmised from the trailer and isn’t a spoiler?

In mythos Poseidon’s wife, a mermaid, is killed by a pirate or sailor, and, he starts to f\*\*\* s\*\*\* up.
