Is cheating a television network out of tens of thousands of dollars a crime or a heroic way to work the system?
That question is at the heart of The Luckiest Man in America, a new film from director Samir Oliveros that tells the true star of Michael Larson (Paul Walter Hauser), a man who broke the game show winnings record, taking home $110,237 from CBS' Press Your Luck in 1984. Larson played against two other contestants โ returning player Ed Long (Brian Geraghty) and Janie Litras (Patti Harrison).
Eventually, it was discovered that Larson had memorized the patterns in the game board, essentially doing his own version of counting cards to ensure his victory. The film recreates Larson's audition and stint on the show as he faces off against host Peter Tomarken (Walton Goggins), creator Bill Carruthers (David Strathairn), a room full of executives, and the show's crew. Entertainment Weekly has your first look at the film, coming to theaters on April 4th.
