i'm curious about the economics of the dodgers situation. i know there have been many articles written about it but like just trying to wrap my head around it....

so they're in the luxury tax for 3+ years now so the tax is 50%. that's a hefty tax they'll be paying indefinitely until they get back under the luxury limit.

they are deferring contracts which helps them..... but then a guy like ohtani will be on the books for $68million per year for like a decade after he retires.

will the dodgers be able to continue this forever or are they setting themselves up for a dominant 2020's and a s***ty 2030s?

or can they really pay something like a billion per year in payroll + luxury tax on a go forward basis

  • Nov 27, 2024

genuinely terrifying to be focusing on one guy who obviously made a tremendous difference but the team is super flawed with or without him, almost would rather actually make moves & try & punt a deal that’s “competitive” & favorable to opt out of…if this is absolutely about money what difference does it make

I mean with deferrals the value of that money will be less later on due to inflation.

Like I think I read somewhere the total value of Ohtani’s contract will be $450M due to the deferrals.

Either way though it’s kinda been their prerogative. They have a plan to be the best team from the last 10 years to the next 10 years. I’m sure they see it as worth it. Especially with the amount of money Ohtani is printing them. But the fans should be preparing themselves for a possibly bad run later on

Deadass was just thinking about that on my last post lmao. Like they could just run the 2020s into the early 2030s and then just sell the team before needing to actually pay it all off. While having like 3 or so chips lol

while this is true, the liabilities of those deferred contracts would be part of the valuation of the sale of the team. i know from our perspective we'd be like "well they're selling for 10 billion and they can say goodbye to those contracts and got off scott free" but that would be built into the valuation so it's not really accurate
