Adding a cap is the only thing that can save this league honestly

I get why you wouldn't want it as a Mets fan but short of Manfred forcing cheap owners to sell it's really the only solution to the massive payroll gap problem

Aaron Judge is now the fastest to get to 350 homers, i love this guy

What’s really stopping these cheaper owners of small market teams from spending more? I know that’s not the sole reason for the payroll gap but I mean dont teams that don’t spend and stink every year also basically get rewarded for not spending and the franchises that top the payroll list pay that tax? It’s almost like a choice.

It is a choice, but my point is that it shouldn't be. Poorer owners of small market teams have absolutely no incentive to spend because they are turning a profit regardless of how good the team is and any level of investment into the roster cuts into that profit

It's malpractice that some owners are allowed and willing to hold teams as passive income-generating portfolio assets and let them rot in a cycle of mediocrity while others are allowed and willing to spend a literal unlimited amount of money to build the best team possible. It's not competitive and it's not healthy for the league

Even if Manfred woke up tomorrow and promised to make the dud owners sell to richer, more active buyers, that wouldn't solve the issue because the current model works for all of them. The poorer owners who won't spend are happy to sit on their hands and do nothing while the Dodgers Padres Yankees and Mets keep the league popular and the richer owners are happy to have fewer serious players at the table and let the bottom feeders of the league serve as their farm teams

Of course "complacent owner" is not a problem exclusive to MLB but at least the other leagues have salary caps which obviously come with salary floors that force owners to spend a certain amount, and they incentivize extending your own homegrown talent rather than shipping them off to big market clubs

    Salary floor

Cohen and company shouldn't be penalized for actually trying to win while poverty owners feed off the revenue sharing

The floor and the cap go hand in hand, you can't have one without the other

I agree with you, I feel like there should be more penalties for those owners and teams than the opposite where if you spend too much you gotta pay more lol

True.. I’m not so against a salary cap but it would curve the market on how much players get paid in the future
