I remember reading an interview with Jon Favreau. He said during the filming of the Lion King remake, he was telling Donald about the upcoming Mandalorian show with Baby Grogu.

Favreau said Donald was adamant about keeping Grogu hidden/out of the advertising in order to create a Beyonce-like surprise drop.

Yes it works for Beyonce. Yes it worked for The Mandalorian.

It did not work for this Gambino album

The culture would be different if Gambino released Human Sacrifice in 2018/2019

He was really on his way to being respected as one of the top artists in the game around then after this is America and then his Coachella performance

Giving a suggestion about Star Wars is not gonna be the same reasoning he put his album out as “incomplete”… you pulled “the more mysterious the better” thing out of thin air. He somewhat explained why it came out the way it did.

I misrembered the Star Wars thing. Donald and Favreau didn't talk about that, but Favreau was inspired by their conversation about Beyonce dropping albums.

We were talking about music and pop culture, and he was saying that what people really like now is to be surprised, because it doesn't happen that much," Favreau said. "When Beyoncé did an album, she would just put it online and everybody would react to it. Just putting it out there spurred a conversation that would become more viral and bring more genuine attention than any marketing."

Also, I never said anything about the album being incomplete. Maybe the quoted post inferred it? But I personally don't think it was. And yeah, you're right about "the more mysterious the better". I should have started my post with a "maybe" or "perhaps".

@maxxing explained about the passing of his father. I didn't know about that context in regards to the album.

However, you have to admit, the rollout was mysterious. The 12 hour unannounced live stream a week before hitting streaming. The album title, artwork and especially the song titles had people talking.

Didn’t he start a new IG and start posting BTI pictures and videos & (what seemed like) teasing something around the anniversary of that too? And no anniversary edition or deluxe came.

I feel like the og tracklist/album cover WAS the anniversary acknowledgment and now he’s onto other things again
