Olympic Village had poor living conditions. The beds were essentially cardboard, food shortages, no AC.

Swimmers in particular had to take a bus from the village to the pool and the buses would break down, had no AC — reaching temps of 30 degrees Celsius. The swimmers would arrive at the village at midnight or 1:00 AM and the only food in the cafeteria was bread rolls and sardines. The pool was too shallow which slowed swimmers down.

France forced triathletes and open water swimmers to swim in what was effectively a sewer. Six athletes have been hospitalized with E. Coli infections.

France also changed the transportation rules for the track athletes the night before certain events which led to some athletes walking to the stadium. This meant they couldn’t warm up in time or some dropped out all together (Fraser-Pryce.)

These Olympics were fun but France was awful as a host.
