Could be for many reasons but there is one reason that no one have yet to talk about:

There was always a hate and tension towards East- African that came from the Old-Head in the African-American community, Some African-American don't consider East- African as Black and whenever they have the chance to mock them by trying to "invalidate" their blackness, i dont know why they became a trend.

In The Weeknd's case the Old-Head in the Black community were hating on him and after his interview they just confirmed it, they took his quote and blow it out of proportion and use it in a way that benefits their agenda, a fake narrative when he "diss" their untouchable OG Idol, they know what he meant BUT they kept the narrative that benefits their agenda which is to take Abel down at all cost

Seriously though. They hop on an artists wave just as they're blowing up, then when they release the hit album or single, theres a million overrated or exposed threads

Legit sounds like something personal OP is projecting on to this situation. Let's pretend that this is some sort of ethnic dispute and not the fact that The Weeknd has become the mainstream face of a genre which his music has greatly deviated from and fans of that genre don't like that.
