The most popular map with the equator countries smaller just happened to be more practical for navigation and a lot of things

At the time they didn’t have any reason to make africa smaller when they owned the place and could flex how big their empires were

Flexing your empire is a W, but when your goal is permanent subjugation of a race, belittling them/their worth to the point that they believe it is a far bigger W.
