“For some reason Kendrick captures the Zeitgeist in a way that Drake or a Taylor can’t..”

because there’s a difference in between commercial dominance and cultural impact

idk if it’s the streaming era or what but for some reason people think the former immediately means the latter and that’s just not true lmao

because there’s a difference in between commercial dominance and cultural impact

    Ding ding ding

The streaming era has falsely made people people that commercial power = cultural impact, and that’s not always the case

Kendrick's GNX numbers were fcking insane for a while, they're nothing now.

In 2024, his back catalog was doing insane numbers. It's now fallen off a cliff

Taylor's numbers are now down 80-90% vs a few years ago

    you're arguing against Spotify numbers.

You’re talking about numbers that are down after ridiculously high peaks

Taylor Swift is 5th in the world right now in daily streams.

Kendrick’s peak was heavily boosted by the combo of Not Like Us and the Super Bowl. His daily numbers were never gonna stay at that level, that’s not true to his catalog

I knew I'd upset stans with actual facts backed by real numbers

“Real numbers” say that Playboi Carti’s MUSIC had the same level of cultural impact that Drake’s ICEMAN did during its first day of release. Is that something you genuinely believe to be the case? If so, then this conversation is pointless

  • Those original predictions crack me up because what did people think? The numbers weren’t gonna drop?

Sounds like you're in a bubble

There's literally numbers that prove what I'm saying completely right lol. You're arguing against streaming numbers published by apple/spotify themselves,. using your own ancedotes

almost like artist like Taylor don’t have a large career that predates streaming and also sell massive physical numbers

Ridiculously high peaks caused by this exact thing i'm talking about.. trends. Kendrick was/is seen as the messiah of rap/music by many, many people. Taylor is/was arguably the biggest US celebrity by a factor of like 3x. You're seen as "in" if you're a swiftie, you're seen as cool if you're a Kendrick fan. Disputing this would be crazy.

So when those two artists release new s*** people go crazy. But because they mostly aren't listening because they actually love the music, their hype/streams doesn't last. Whilst for Bad Bunny, Drake and Morgan it does. Because none of those artists have outside factors pushing them along.

Look at Morgan man lol. His peak has lasted like 3-4 years now. It's not gone down at all. That's what having an audience that's OBSESSED with the music gets you

funnily enough MUSIC literally proves my point even more

Carti in 2024/2025 was literally the artist to listen to for everyone under 30. You were seen as "in" if you listened to him. It was a huge trend that literally fell off a cliff, because people realised at the end of the day, the music is ass.

The trend and obsession was with the idea of what Carti represents, not the reality of him as an artist.

I'll never understand how Carti managed to be seen as so cool for that period of time. It was really f***ing weird

music couldve had that cultural impact but he decided to throw his magnum opus away to become the average atlanta rapper

WLR not impactful to you? carti had a crazy run til he sold w MUSIC
