In an album review dedicated to Jack Harlow's new project, reviewer Anthony Fantano, also known as TheNeedleDrop, makes a reference to a very specific rap line in one of the songs featuring rapper Lil Wayne (timecode 7:50):

Interesting how the reviewer calls the verse (paraphrasing) 'one of the worst Wayne features of the year' making a particular emphasis on a line 'eating so much shrimp, you get iodine poisoning.'

The line, of course, is a reference to one of the most iconic rap singles of the 2000s, Three 6 Mafia's Sippin On Some Syrup:

The first verse from the late rapper Pimp C of UGK went on to become one of his most popular ones, with 'eating so much shrimp' becoming one his most recognizable quotables; one Quora thread, for example, is dedicated to figuring out how much shrimp one must eat to actually get iodine poisoning

The story would probably end there, at simple ignorance or inability of the reviewer to recall that specific line, but it actually gets deeper. Come to find out, Anthony Fantano actually PRAISED the line a few years ago as part of a track from Danny Brown, a prolific rapper of whom Fantano is a big fan (timecode 4:15):

referring to that verse as 'some of the funniest and wittiest writing' on the album in question, and calling the entire verse 'some classic Danny Brown if one ever heard some'

this thread is not a takedown or any attempt at coming after the validity of the reviewer (who I am a relative fan of.) At the same time, it felt important to me to point out how sometimes one might go through so much music that certain things start slipping which results in these random kinda weird moments. especially interesting how for one rapper, a significantly less popular one, the line might get praise, while at the same time being trashed when used by a very mainstream artist. We can talk about 'the whole package' or how 'you made it a hot line, I made it a hot song,' but at the end of the day certain things are really hard to justify, especially when it comes to some of the most popular and clever quotables from one of the legends of their respective scene
