Gen Z? help me understand this. has this not been a thing that existed for a long time now? the evaluation of an artist's works amongst each other? let's say we're sticking to music. you believe there has been a significant shift regarding that, due to social media?

I’m around teenagers a lot (own a tutoring and coaching company) and it’s like kids physically can’t say they enjoy something without someone saying yeah but this is better.

right. it's absolutely a thing that happens, but hasn't it always? that's the point i'm trying to pick your brain on.

let me also clarify i don't belong to Gen Z lol, but the post stuck out to me because i'm trying to draw your specific connection between their generation, social media, and how it has affected criticism of artists' works. not even solely in music, since you left it at art in general.

i feel like if you have had social media since elementary school then your brain is ingrained with nothing but comparison.

not even their fault. as a 30 year old facebook didnt even exist for me until college and by that time it was too late so i never had any of it.

at this point teenagers have been so ingrained with constant comparison and insecurities and it is hard for them to enjoy things instead of constantly compare. and streaming kinda makes it worse because there are infinite albums and you cant sit with one anymore without thinking ahhh i could be listening to this other one.

streaming is an entirely different conversation for a different day haha. i understand your perspective due to your personal experience, but back then did you not find others to be inclined to be comparative in pretty much the same fashion as now? social media definitely magnifies it but idk if its the cause.

seems like something that's always been around and always will be. like the other poster said, it's just human nature.

no yeah i see that. i just think it has become worse over time. i didnt press play on DAMN and immediately compare it to kennys other 2 because it is its own entity.
