Could they have made her relevant? Maybe but they aren’t why people still talk about her

“Andy Warhol created his Factory. He plucked Nico out and said: ‘This is what the Velvet Underground needs, we need someone who looks like you in the band.’ It wasn’t because of talent, it was because of beauty and it was a very cynical sort of reason,”
She was there cause she had the looks not the talent or connects

Of course it wasnt because of talent (at least to Warhol and Reed, anyway). But her connections (more importantly, her public status) were certainly a factor. Her role was to play herself: a socialite. Like if in the mid-2000s Paris Hilton starred in a few John Waters films, then performed shows and recorded a few songs with Acid Mothers Temple.

That's what Andy's whole "gimmick" was with promoting VU as a performance piece exhibit —"unrefined" musicians playing abrasive and endurance-testing live sets, under the guise of pop-culture vanity. Lou's background in Doo-Wop music being contradicted by his Beat lyricism. Nico's international "tabloid model" public image contradicted by her unconventional, "un-sexy" vocals . Then Cale's LaMonte Young-inspired drones, and Tucker drumming with super human stamina, harshly cuts across the popular forms of the other two. (Not to mention Sterling's mutant ability to keep the rest of the band's noise together with his guitar.)

The end goal being songs that become impossible to tell if the band knows what its doing, or just throwing together things on the spot — which is reiterated physically/visually through their black and white conservative outfits, clashing with music about prideful d*** abuse and sexual liberation. Each of the members themselves embodying the different personalities of the NY art scene. A convergence of pop-culture and outsider aesthetics until they become indistinguishable from one another.

I just don’t think she would be relevant without them

    Bro how tho? Haha

She was a noteworthy model in Europe that got into mags after becoming bffs friends with a local phototographer. On a trip to Paris he introduced her Willy Maywald, who immediately signed Nico as one of his premiere cover girls.

She re-named herself "Nico" after hearing friends tell stories about about film producer and nightlife extraordinaire Nico Papatakis (who was also married to superstar actress Anouk Aimee) — and then she met him at a society dinner party and they "fell in love" with each other. He flew her across the Atlantic to NYC routinely (this is in the 50s, where just a single one-way ticket from America to Europe was like $5,000) to have her company.

All the while she starts up with another man in France, who becomes her only baby daddy, and it's Alain-goddamn-Delon Then she has a brief appearance in one of the most talked about movies of the 20th century — a "brief appearance" meaning her scene is one of the most memorable moments in the film, featuring the leading man Marcello Mastroianni yelling her typically male name "Nico!", before she appears on screen in all her beauty. (Which is why such a brief cameo in La Dolce Vita managed to increase her public notoriety quite a bit.)

Then she has affairs with Bob Dylan and Brian Jones in the mid-sixties, during the peak of both artist's public celebrity. It was only towards the end of her affair with Jones, when she decided to take a break from hanging out with the likes of David Bailey and Paul McCartney (this is after Beatlemania happened, he's a certified icon during this time) and go with Jones to Warhol's Factory in NY.

So you can look at all those bolded names of people Nico surrounded herself with — people who were exponentially more famous than all 4 Velvets combined and even Warhol himself — and say: "I don't think Nico would be relevant if it weren't for this underground band she made 3 and a half songs with before leaving and exiling herself with Jim Morrison to get severely addicted to heroin."
