Haven't watched the video yet but seeing the comments I disagree w blaming South rappers in general

There was a whole crop of South rappers who were lyrical and loved hip-hop, seems bogus to blame them

IMO the fans are far more to blame

1. I fw all those guys
2. I make beats and those dudes (dlow fatt etc) are influential as hell as far as how upcoming street rappers make music

and it all trickles back to the mid 2010’s southern trap landscape

The point is that the default archetype that people kinda are tired of in rap stems back to southern mid 2010’s trap and Gucci Flocka Future fr before that lol

the “default” in rap right now is not whatever you’re talking about its whatever the Rxk and rage niggas doing now and formerly slizzy and Detroit while YSL was in jail

none of that is because of the south lmaooo, niggas been saying the south is dead since 2023, which one is it??? we three years removed from “Lil Baby fell off” how is the South still to blame?

What does Lil Baby falling off have to do with niggas like Fatt DLow Fox BD Rylo or even more regional southern rappers like Mudbaby Ru or Lil Double 0 still dominating niggas aux cords.I’ve never pulled up to a gas station and niggas bumping rage or RxK anything lol they bump random local street rappers or similar s*** to the niggas I named above. The “default” in rap right now for most aspiring new trap/street rappers is gonna be the post Fatt post Dlow etc sound which again the ethos, tropes and approach to that stems from mid to late 2010’s southern/southeastern rap. The slang the frequently used beat sounds, the entire ecosystem based off the 2010’s southern trap landscape

I think trap becoming the universal sound of the south was what led to the relative stasis we're seeing now in the mainstream. The south in the 90s-early 2010s fr saved rap from stagnating in the 2000s. It's just the broad range of sounds in the south got flattened into just trap and it's made for a kind of bland and one-dimensional cultural presence in the mainstream.

like the south innovated a lot of sounds production-wise

1) Georgia
2) Tennessee
3) Florida
4) Louisiana
5) Texas

All had multiple musical movements evolving at the same time, and produced a huge library of stone cold classics going into the early 2010s. It all kind of peaked in 2015 when trap was still cutting edge, but it's just gotten pretty repetitive since then because trap is all you get anymore on the charts

Yep. I'll always show love to southern hip hop. I think the south is the best overall region for hip hop, even if New York is at least historically the best state. East coast as a whole was surpassed by the south by the late 90s tbh

I like most of the auto-crooner rappers too, at least at their best, but even if you want to stupidly condemn all of them to being categorically considered trash, those 20 are just stone cold legends.

Cole got bars at least. He's not my favorite musically but he is def incredible behind the mic. The music just doesn't always match the lyrical talent, but plenty of east coast rappers fall into the same category. Most of Eminem's career is arguably defined by being a sharp lyricist who makes mediocre music honestly. Cole deserves his props.

See when we say things like this we're completely disregarding @op video, he never said the south sucks lol.

And none of these 20 with the exception of Big number 4 contributed to what the current sound of hip hop is like.

I love trap too, I just think it's tacky how it's become the only commercially viable sound for rap as a whole, let alone southern hip hop.

you coulda just named a specific big 4 of Atlanta rappers instead of the South and that woulda probably been more agreeable to be honest with ya @op

Have all tangibly influenced the sound of hip hop today. Three 6 are the most obvious example of course, but those guys all have their DNA in modern hip hop as well. Wayne is a lot of new gen artists favorite rapper and I'd say atp Project Pat is more acutely influential on the current sound of hip hop, like 2026 hip hop, versus Three 6 Mafia. Both are still influencing the game but the influence of Pat on modern street rap is staggering atp. Damn near every street rapper has gotten something from Pat and almost none of them are even nearly as good.

But yeah the blanket condemnation of the south is kinda crazy. Even if OP zeroed in on 2010s and beyond it would be more understandable, but just the south out of context is wild
