the problem with that is that all human beings want more for themselves, so the incentives are poor. You aren't working harder for the potential of living a better life. Your incentive is to slave away so your life can be a constant. And it would get moreso frustrating when there are free riders in your system. It's way too difficult and frustrating to work for the benefit of a collective over the benefit of just yourself. It also doesn't motivate you to become the best possible version of yourself, but to rather just keep up with the collective, which is inefficient.

I have a problem with you just up and assuming people just inherently want access, I don't think it holds much merit when looking at human history as a whole.
Simply going off of the human life cycle, we're born completely vulnerable and needing others to sustain us for almost two decades of our lives, and once we've reached full maturity we still tend towards other people and form societies. That defeats the whole idea that people are inherently selfish. Personally I think that was just some liberal misguided justification for big 'L' Liberal ideology.
And if you look at the world as it is now, several people are more than willing to go out their way to help people with several people taking on careers like teaching nursing and so on despite the poor pay that usually comes with these careers, even in far right circles the idea of community is big, and is reflected through ultranationalist sentiments among those groups.
If people were as strongly opposed to collectivism, then we'd actually live in caves and up trees since, even building mudhuts needs there to be a will to act on the greater good of the community
Hyper individualism is, in my opinion, borne out of living in the society we do which rewards antisocial behaviour, as opposed to more socially progressive behaviour.
