He didn’t make it this far by piggybacking off of his relationships, he did it off his own merit.
However, his relationships to respected artists has embellished his career without a doubt. Be it OF producing Earl, Frank, The Internet, Steve Lacy + more or his proximity to Pharrell, Rocky, Mac Miller, Solange, etc. all of these connects has benefited his career through osmosis because it feels like he SHOULD be amongst the biggest in the game even if the music hasn’t quite reached the level of those that are from a cultural standpoint. I mean, his friends are universally loved so why wouldn’t he be?
Not only that but his devout fanbase is probably a melting pot of his own fans, remnants of OF’s fanbase and fans of these other artists that adore him
Ok I see what you're trying to say but I don't agree. To me the 2 points negate each other I don't think he'd make it out of the early 10s off that alone, you'd have to have the work to back it up. Being around those people probably does help in some way but you have to have a product people are willing to come back to.
Thoughts on Durand Bernarr?
I dont listen to enough of his music but he is up there too. That’s on me.

This is me with Cynthia Erivio lol...
That being said, I hate to say that Darling, I is a generational song 💔
There’s one issue with this song for me
Idk if I’m tripping but it sounds like he mistimed Teezo’s vocals at 2:12
I’ve just assumed the reason I don’t really vibe with Tyler’s s*** is just because I’m old and don’t get it. I like some of the songs but I find it unremarkable on the whole
It’s just too many good female vocalists in R&B.
for every durand bernarr
there’s a cleo sol, cherise, and liv.e (she remind me a lil bit of badu)
DISCLAIMER: this list is talking merely vocal ability, this list doesn’t necessarily mean they make the best music
Ari Lennox (seeing her live…yeah she’s holding it down as a voice in the mainstream of R&B)
Muni Long
Ravyn Lenae
Nai Palm (that weird white girl from Australia got the gift bro)
Hol up dijon man what im bugging lol
HM: durand bernarr, Leon Bridges, Lucky Daye (i’ll tie em cause while I dont listen to a lot of their catalog, gotta put a man on this list out of fairness and they are exceptionally great singers), that nigga from Children of Zeus, Jacob Banks (peep the new album he dropped), and JHud (would she classify as modern?)
Ravyn

Glad we can agree to disagree
Don’t think his career looks remotely the same without this factor though
I aint subbing dude
Just looking back at that some of that list of current r&b esque artists and some of them reminding me why I hate COLORS/Tiny Desk-core music
F**k tom misch, Jordan rakei, mahalia, h.e.r., yussef dayes, CoZ, Inflo, jungle & any act that puts live instrumentation over great ideas
F**k any musician who listened to D'Angelo & Lauryn Hill a couple times & decided to contribute to the milquetoast bedroom-pup bootleg- neo-soul sound that's been going on for the past 10 years
F**k south london r&b, f**k Res for making this sound 23 years ago before all these clowns tried it (but at least she did it first & did it well)
F**k Gilles Peterson's current audience & any R&B act whose main audience is white women with a lauryn hill bedroom poster or 'vibes' playlist

Outside of Lucky, Daniel from dvsn, Gallant, Durand, Luke James & Leon Bridges I don't know many more males

This a real ass post that I do actually agree with.
UK singers definitely playing catch up and it shows.
Nah he’s absolutely on the target here.
I just don't understand what he means. Explain?
Nah he’s absolutely on the target here.
This should be a thread all on its own, bedroom pub neo soul is killing me

On this note I need James Vickery held accountable
Res is a treasure
I like the Res album
But her making that album must've send a reverberation across the universe because these failed Neo-Soul acts sound like bootleg versions of her but 20 years late
Y'know, Cherry Bomb was the last time I actually was excited for a Tyler album and to this day is my favorite album by him. A cathartic moment before evolving into the artist he is today.
I honestly don't care about his music anymore, growing up from OG Odd Future, it's beautiful to see him blow up and advance his craft that I only dreamed of in HS, but at the same time as with Odd Future itself, you kinda grow away from certain sounds, and while I see the vision, it doesn't impress me like I would hope. Which is ok I guess. I don't think he's overrated, and I'm glad he's getting his flowers, he's a visionary lowkey, but I say that to say....
half s\*\*\*post half true Majority of UK r&B really has been tryna recreate this song.
RT @iamiguel
tldr; he makes weird music for normies who wanna be seen as weird. which hey, is honestly cool, i cant hate on that. you dont have to make a long post to say that really.
