My whole thing with this discussion is that y'all projecting narratives on to bro that simply does not exist.

Dude has the numbers, sells out his own festivals, does great numbers when he goes on tour etc

If people only liked the "idea of him" more than "listening to his music" this wouldn't be the case

Picture where’d he’d be at with refined ideas that’d lend itself to consistent, transcendent records and inarguable staples within the genre

We’re talking about him potentially being the frontrunner of this hip hop thing and no one would be able to say or do s*** about it

This thread is less about what he is and more about what he could be

You and him are saying two different things tho bro.

Tyler could be bigger of course but to apply this rhetoric that people like the "idea of him" more than they do the "actual music" is silly, and that's what Himothee said.

Honestlly what Himothee said lowkey applies to other artists more than Tyler lol

I think Tyler being his fullest self and really continuing to kill it and have a s*** ton of success is him fulfilling his potential honestly. Ppl are too afraid of weird/different s*** to really let him be the front runner of hip hop and everyone is down with it. Bro would have to dress and act different and make whole different sounding music for niggas to put him at the front of hip hop like that. Who he is now is working for him like hell

F**k Will.I.Am for telling Tyler 'he'd have to sell out eventually'

Will.I.Am really got the worst fits of all time too

For him to make it all this way & while being in charge of his own creative direction is truly inspiring & impressive

The funny thing about this though is you could literally say the exact same about his predecessors

It’s on record that this was a general sentiment to a similar degree

Yeah but I mean when you compare 2013 Tyler to now he has sold out, cleaned up, and grew up in some ways natural and in other ways calculated. Very subtle but for the most part he’s kept his creative self and vision consistent and continuously refined it even while in the mainstream

Ye and Pharrell definitely meshed more with the most popular acts of their time and both arguably had more pop appeal. Both were producing for and working w the biggest names in the game and while T already is one of the biggest names in the game in his own merit his art is too individualized for him to really seamlessly combine with some of the biggest artists out like his predecessors did

the fact he’s never been considered part of the big 3 says everything. people talk about him like he’s jay z, kanye, drake etc levels of popularity when he’s never been that.
