Had a crazy ass night last night, but yea. This album was one of the most interesting first listens I've had in a while.

I APOLOGIZE IN ADVANCE FOR THE LONG POST LMAO

I was driving back to NY from Jersey on the highway after seeing Top Gun. The vibes were literally like this, no other way to put it. I had the volume on full tilt, the night sky as well as the roads were a tad bit damp from the rain earlier in the day, and just off the highways there were hella neon signs advertising for clubs, restaurants, diners and stores and what not. Mood was set.

The intro "Dawn FM" was interesting to me, reminded me of Daft Punks' "WDPK 83.7 FM" off their Homework album. I was like well s***, here we go lol.

The first proper track "Gasoline" was kinda underwhelming to me, idk if it was the vocals on it or something, but it just wasn't gelling with me. I was uncertain about this album just off this first track.

Then some crazy s*** happened. "How Do I Make You Love Me" started playing and I'm thinking "we got a groove going" this s*** is catchy. Then the way the beat built up before the chorus starts was just insane to me.. I switched lanes and started speeding in the fast lane right when the beat drops and the Weeknd goes "HOW DOOOOOO I MAKE YOUUUU LOVEEEE MEEEEE"

Bro I was in that b**** whippin it like Tron Legacy nigga on god, straight Blade Runner s***

From there on out, the tracklist was insane. Take My Breath into Sacrifice was one of the craziest listening experiences, s*** was banger after banger.

Then I got to Here We Go.. Again, with Tyler. I'm gonna be real with folks! I love T's music and I was liking this direction Weeknd was heading in, but I think this song was too much of a soft ballad for T to be on. He would've SMOKED I Heard You're Married with Lil Wayne tbh. The production on that as opposed to HWGA is more of T's lane. BUT, the song wasn't bad. It's just not what I was expecting.

Right after that though the track list picked right back up man. I'd say the only songs after that where I was meh or nah on was Starry Eyes and Less Than Zero.

Starry Eyes was cool, but I felt like it wasn't as fresh and exciting as some of the other tracks on here and Less Than Zero was too much 80's cheese that you'd see in a movie by the Brat Pack like St. Elmo's Fire.

But bro, that first listen was AMAZING, and there's hella tracks that are gonna be the soundtrack to my summer. Like legit, I'm going to be blasting Sacrifice, How Do I Make You Love Me, Take My Breath, I Heard You're Married when I'm hitting the beach and what not.

This album legit brought back the feelings when I first discovered Daft Punk and city pop artists like Minako Yoshida, Kaoru Akimoto, Tatsuro Yamashita and them.

It's amazing to me that these vibes are coming from an artist as big as The Weeknd.

I see why y'all got it as AOTY. I'm not gonna put it as my definitve AOTY just cuz there's so many projects I initially missed out on this year that I gotta revisit like Denzel Curry and others. But this is a STRONG contender man.

You have to really be a f***ing dork to call this boring, this s*** is groovy as hell. I went in not knowing what to expect and ended up enjoying it & I think people need to relax on all the weird ass hang-ups and expectations they have and let the music just be music.

I'm noticing as I grow as a listener and fan of music and film that sometimes an album, movie or an artist isn't trash, I just wasn't in the right head space / mood to give their work a fair shot.

If y'all are big Weeknd fans and what not, could you recommend me any more of his works in this discography that have a similar feel and vibe to this? Thanks in advance.

CHURCH OF HOW DO I MAKE YOU LOVE ME ASSEMBLE

How Do I Make You Love Me is literally everything I want in an 80's inspired song. the synths, the bombastic production, the layered vocals with the falsetto on the backing tracks, like this man really isn't on some cheap nostalgia trick he's literally one of the few doing this 80s revival s*** RIGHT

Can I get the backstory on that? Like I didn't follow. Was Weeknd expected to drop a big pop album and he flopped or something, did this album even have a rollout cuz I'm seeing that it dropped in the literal beginning of January

    great read

yeah soon as you said you were doing a night time ride i knew this was gonna hit

    Out of Time
How Do I make You Love Me
    Sacrifice

    probably my top 3

the albums similar in theme to OPN's album Magic Oneohtrix Point Never, might be worth checking out. It's not pop but the two of them worked together on these records. I'm not sure the extent weeknd had on Magic OPN but he was an exec producer on it, and OPN produced on most of the songs on dawn fm.

I think if this album didn’t drop at the top of the year it would have been received better as a proper summer album. Sad to hear you didn’t like Less Than Zero tho that was some Bowie s***

Hard agree on him embracing the Daft Punk vibes weird asf that he’s the artist carrying on their sound he was who I least expected to do so
