The choice of the capital of São Paulo for the start of this tour was not a coincidence. The Weeknd visited the city last October, performing two sold-out nights at Allianz Parque with the show “After Hours Til Dawn”. It was in the capital of São Paulo that Abel composed the central music of the new album, “Hurry Up Tomorrow” – affectionately nicknamed “Frankenstein” by the singer for exploring different sounds, but without losing its essence. Something he does masterfully. “I can speak for all artists when I say that it is difficult to put into words the love and energy that the Brazilian people express when you are on stage,” says The Weeknd. “You feel music deeply. São Paulo and Rio reminded me that the frequencies we emit as musicians are important. They remind me why I wanted to make music: to connect. I will spend the rest of my life aware of that.”
For those who won’t be in South America next month, the Weeknd will stream his one-night-only concert experience in São Paulo, Brazil on YouTube. The singer is set to hit the stage in South America on Sept. 7 at Estádio MorumBIS. Produced by Live Nation, the show promises to feature his chart-topping hits as well as “offer a glimpse into what’s next for the artist,” according to a release. Fans can watch the show on his YouTube page beginning at 8 p.m. ET. “I’m so excited to announce that we’ll be live streaming my show from São Paulo, Brazil, so everyone around the world can be a part of this special night,” said the Weeknd in a statement. “I wish I could come to every city and town on earth, but moments like this give us the chance to connect in real time at least and share that energy together, no matter where you are.” In tandem with the show, he will donate 10 percent of net proceeds from merch sales at the event and online to the Brazilian Soul Fund to help local families rebuild in the aftermath of natural disasters and floods.
The Weeknd has announced a special, “one-night-only” concert featuring an all-new show in Brazil taking place on September 7. The concert, which will take place at Sao Paulo’s Estádio MorumBIS and is produced by Live Nation, will debut a “never-before-seen production,” according to the announcement. The Weeknd has largely been off the radar since completing his “After Hours Til Dawn” tour of North America and Europe last year and starring in “The Idol” last summer. The stadium tour played to more than 3 million people over two years. No further information was announced although it seems likely that new music is in the offing, and the concert will mark the launch of his next musical chapter.
Tesfaye’s identity crisis was about more than juggling two characters in one night. “I’m going through a cathartic path right now,” he said. “It’s getting to a place and a time where I’m getting ready to close the Weeknd chapter. I’ll still make music, maybe as Abel, maybe as The Weeknd. But I still want to kill The Weeknd. And I will. Eventually. I’m definitely trying to shed that skin and be reborn.”
"The album I’m working on now is probably my last hurrah as The Weeknd. This is something that I have to do. As The Weeknd, I’ve said everything I can say.”
