Did you see what they did to my boi sanji in the latest kizaru fight
yes
your boi sanji is still cool
Exactly.
For every hood nigga who only listens to radio/club s*** they can vibe too, there's a suburban White guy who also listens to mainstream s***.
And there's plenty of Black hip hop heads from the hood. They're just less attention seeking than their White counterparts or don't have the money/tools to have a platform.
Hell, I went to one of the grimiest high schools in America that's the same as one in an old movie starring Morgan Freeman. And I still met plenty of niggas who f***ed with 90's hip hop and some underground s***.
People discount how much mixtapes play a role in hip hop knowledge too. Mixtapes where rappers would often showcase their best displays of rapping were very popular in the hood. I remember niggas reciting songs off of the mixtapes of Wayne, G Unit, Dipset, Jada, Gucci, Jeezy, ASAP, Cole, etc. like they were hit singles.
I noticed many White hip hop heads tend to downplay the importance of mixtapes way more than Black hip hop heads. Many view them as "throwaways" and only focus on regular albums.
I agree. It’s very disingenuous to boil it down to “uneducated black person likes lowest denominator rap” like A LOT conscious music also stems from those environments and honestly vice versa where folks stemming from better environments want to push the hood s*** (that’s another convo for another day). I personally respect and embrace discussion about hip hop regardless of background or race, but I think a lot (!!) of discourse these days have been tainted by white people that have some sort of elitist mentality of rap that to your point thinks they’re above certain music and thereby makes their opinion mean more than it really does. I think that’s why I can’t stand Fantano because although it’s far from just his fault specifically I think he’s really the poster child of it. Basically just don’t be weird about it and more than likely nobody is really going to care what your background is bottom line

I see this s*** in basketball too.
Especially when they downplay Kobe because of stats.
