Only thing controversial is 4's placement since it's generally considered one of the best seasons of television ever but it's all opinion I ain't mad at ya

At this point, I've accepted that I respect season 4 more than I like it. I still have no problem calling it the most important season of the show because it is.

Just finished my series rewatch.

Look man, I loved season 5. It's aged very well. The serial killer storyline gets flak and I'm like The Wire is grounded in how it deals with things but stylized in what happens. No way Hamsterdam in season 3 actually takes off or how a single dude from NY, not even a Baltimore legend (Brother Mouzone) instills so much fear like that. But it worked for me.

First two episodes of season 5 were alright but man, it was enthralling. Instead of ending, the show just goes on because the people in their various systems get replaced. It's largely depressing. Michael the new Omar. Duke the new Bubbles. Bubbles the new man. Sydnor the new McNulty. Carcetti the same old mayor just like Royce. The Baltimore Sun getting that Pulitzer. Gus gets demoted but f***ing Scott gets the spotlight. Straight bullshit. The fact that Randy's future is bleaker than Naymond's...damn.

Rewatching season 5 made the rankings much harder because while traditional press been phased out, the message is still so relevant.

just started a new rewatch - on season 2 still. what an amazing series

i think season 5 is interesting because there's a lot of parallels between david simon himself and Jimmy Mcnulty that season.

He's so jealous of the success of Sopranos and Deadwood it's palpable. He's sensationalizing his own series to get people to give a f*** about the wire, in the same way tha Mcnulty's sensationalizing these random deaths to get people to give a f*** about west baltimore.

Whether that really works or not, your mileage may vary but i do think simon succumbed to some baser instincts in his writing to get his point across that season
