Ringtone era is nostalgic but it produced very few good albums. And post-08 collapse rap was dire.
What we're seeing now is just an inevitable contraction from rap's peak. It's being redefined, and the new definition is pretty underwhelming if you don't prioritize texture and melody.
There’s no way idiots like u are still saying Opium has no buzz
I don't follow Opium, but the s*** I've heard just sounds like an extension of the Soundcloud era, which I'm not a fan of either
This thread is genuinely made like 3 times a week
Exact same topic and identical wording every time
Rappers are coming out saying rap is dying almost every day, try again
we good over here, hiphop is fine
we have a new lil wayne but y'all accuse him of being white
Jack Harlow is unironically better than Eminem
Genuinely should get a 24 hour mute saying s*** like this
This thread topic has been pulverized
yup, the old guard is still keeping hiphop alive several years later which is sad af. but its yall fault considering the no-talent having s***ters u guys hype up. we were bound to end up like this
Let me see something. Who’s your best rapper?
we have a new lil wayne but y'all accuse him of being white
And pretty sure he’s guilty
Whether you like it or not, the youth always what decides what’s hot.
Remember, old heads back in the day used to s*** on Lil Wayne, yet he’s revered as one of the goats to our gen.
Memes like this existed
These were made by suburban white kids that only listened to 90s rap & Eminem
Drake still around
Let me see something. Who’s your best rapper?
when u say best wym? My favorite or who I think is the greatest of all time?
Genuinely should get a 24 hour mute saying s*** like this

OP 4 weeks ago: hiphop needs to fall off
OP today: there is nothing that’s showing any progression in mainstream rap
Make up your f***ing mind nigga, otherwise just shut the f*** up with this tired ass conversation topic
Great but my point still stands lol
Music>Trends
Soundcloud rap showed us all that trends ain't s***. Hip hop is healing rn and rebuilding after being made into a mockery of itself between 2017-2020
2021-2023 we've been seeing a slow rebuild for the genre and 2023 I feel could be the start of something special
2017-2020 were dark f***ing times man

Two things can be true
HipHop can fall off commercially and still be progress musically
The point of the other thread was so that HipHop can weed out the clout chasers and bring actual quality back
Soundcloud era is worse than the ringtone era because everyone knew ringtone rap sucked and some of it was cute in its own way
We were all told to be "open-minded" as neoliberalism consumed the experimental hip hop wave of 2010-2016 and created a bunch of stupid half-assed trap music with buzzy synths and it was called "experimental" or "new gen"
COVID nuked the clout era and the underground push for lyricism, style, and good production has been creeping back since 2021
shoutout Carti, Pop Smoke, and 21 holding it down in 2020 because the rest of the mainstream that year was f***ing fumbling. Uzi was cool too

Whether you liked it or not, SC rap pushed rap forward, rappers started to hop on trap beats more heavily because of SoundCloud rap
Whether you liked it or not, SC rap pushed rap forward, rappers started to hop on trap beats more heavily because of SoundCloud rap
It didn't push s*** forward
Soundcloud rap was a retarted version of the s*** Raider Klan, Glory Boyz, ASAP Mob, and Main Attrakionz were doing in the early-to-mid 2010s. It didn't innovate s*** and was a redundant gentrified version of s*** like "Pretty Flacko", "Macaroni Time", "Chuch", etc. Carti, Uzi, and sorta Trippie are the only relevant soundcloud rappers in the game anymore and 2/3 of them got their start in the early-to-mid 2010s. The rest of them either fell off or switched lanes
And rappers "hop on" a lot of watered down, weak ass trap beats to ride streaming trends. All the good trap from that era was either being made by trap artists or coming from the drill scene.
