I watched it for the first time a few days ago. Watching I really got that this was a great story, that was executed well, very well, so much so that for about 2 hours after watching it I couldn't shake this deep sadness about Daniel. I want to call the movie great but it moved me a little to much. Yes, I know "that's the mark of a great movie". But man, I kinda block myself from thinking about it these days.

It's hard for me personally because most movies I call great I can detach from them somewhat. It's not a knock on There Will Be Blood, it's just something I've noticed. Like The Hunt was such a painful story but I did leave it thinking just that, it was a story. This one kinda depressed me a bit, it had me wishing Daniel could have seen a therapist and found love and s***. And not be in whatever f***ing nasty place he was clearly operating from. "Bastard from a basket". Oh my God.

It's heresy but I haven't fully enjoyed a Paul Thomas Anderson movie yet, but he sure as f*** knows how to keep my head in a movie.

Ooh I have a different feeling completely, I too feel some sadness but it is directed towards H.W, his story and treatment is so tragic to me. The final scene where adult H.W. visits Daniel in his mansion really seals this for me. I also think it was notable that he ended up marrying the girl whose families farm was stolen by Daniel.

Daniel is to me an irredeemable person, he's given so many chances to do that but doesn't every time, culminating in him beating to death the only person in life to ever make him admit that he has sinned and thus recognize his evilness

Love the movie but Johnny Greenwood’s score is almost unlistenable in almost every scene

You're right that was also sad. I keep remembering the way he left him as he was scared and in panic, just discovering that he was deaf. That broke my heart. When his assistant asks if Daniel is ok and he just, without skipping a beat says "nope".

I agree, he is an irredeemable character, if not for everything else just the way he treated HW

It really intrigued me the whole way through, but like I said earlier the ending of the journey left me with this sadness that still troubles me today. There are lots of movies recently which people have been raving about which bored me to death so I do get it man
