I hate praising Polanski's work
terrible human being, it gets even more disgusting when you consider that sexual abuse is a recurring theme in his filmography, he's a master of his craft tho
Forget it @aLIEN, it's Chinatown
I'm so glad that polanski changed the ending, in the original screenplay the movie ends with evelyn killing her father and her and jake living happily ever after lmao

It does?!
Damn. Robert Towne always gets lauded for it being the best screenplay ever written but I guess people have been conveniently leaving out that detail.

Had no idea about that, that would've ruin the movie
The ending we got is the only one that works, it couldn't be any other way fr

I feel like that’s a tidbit that gets brought up anytime the movie’s ending is. It’s even on the Wiki page
Not saying it’s something everyone knows but I wouldn’t say people have been leaving out the detail
Chinatown. My favourite film
I hate praising Polanski's work
it’s considered one of the best screenplays oat and Polanski didn’t write it, so I think it still deserves praise
From a director standpoint I don’t really see how he did much

Embarrassed to say I never knew it in that case, despite having seen the film a good half a dozen times.

one of the best examples of a fantastic script thats still studied in film classes til this day but I doubt the movie would've been as perfectly realized as it is without Polasnki's direction imo

yeah, polanski talked him out of it lol, towne initially hated polanski's ending and felt it was too depressing but polanski wanted the movie to stand out and refused to give it a happy ending, genius move on his part tbh

I can’t see it ending any other way one of the best and done so well

“A happy ending” I mean killing your dad because he raped you is barely a happy ending. I actually think that would’ve be interesting too.
