I don't dislike his music but Trippie is not the bar to me

I'm only making that comparison bc he invited it

I like xav more than I ever did with trippie but I guess the point is we don't really have huge era defining rappers so much anymore which sucks

I don't understand why so much of new hip hop seems to just be hyper pop

wait who on that list is hyperpop??

  • Fever

Isn't it kind of weird the bar is trippie after all these years though?

Trippie is def not the bar

Well yeah streaming is how people listen to music. They’re just gonna be niche artists til that changes

That's true but idk that Trippie was ever one of those, even having made songs reaching for broader appeal like Wish or Taking a Walk

It's funny bc to the extent that he is well known, its more for songs like Poles 1469 or Miss the Rage

its all about making choices. Labels pushing artists in corners and not giving them creative freedom, why everything sounds the same every album they make. With a few newer artists i have hope…

    Ezcodylee
    2Hollis
    Lucy Bedroque
    Slayr

I'm not being serious, but a lot of this 2nd wave rage/post rage/whatever takes a ton of ideas from earlier hyperpop, specifically the nosie focused stuff like some early 100 gecs. It's also all so incredibly un-serious in a similar vein

I like this new sound a lot btw.

I think it'd be funny to compare this stuff to power violence as a genre too

Lol nope he was always just kind of there and happened to maintain some level of a fanbase over the years

I only ever listen to that freestyle with juice at this point

  • It really is incredible and unfortunate that Trippie is the last of that era with basically any relevancy. Unfortunately the victors get to tell how the story went and everyone else is dead or irrelevant.

Edit: except like Uzi, Kodak or Carti, but they’re totally above the SoundCloud era

I think just blaming streaming doesn't really make sense because this was true in 2016-2020 and we had plenty of major breakouts still. Uzi and carti didn't pop off from datpiff

nettspend has got to be the worst 'rapper' of all time, not kidding. i genuinely can't fathom someone enjoying his music, not even kids. Luckily his songs are like 1 minute long

I’ll cop to being an unc, that’s how I feel about all of these niggas lol. Those Teezus/Diamond niggas were recommended by some pub I actually valued back in the day and that was the second worst project I heard this year. The WORST was that bullshit by Nine Vicious

These mother f***ers are supposed to populate the same space for their generation as TI, Kanye, Wayne or Drake, Kendrick, Tyler or even f***ing X, Peep, Juice

Just a law of diminishing returns on display here

Yes and no. Streaming took over as the only way to listen to music by 2018-19

Also the artists you mentioned haven’t made any lasting work in over half a decade.

Who are the major breakouts from 2018 and on?

Babytron, new 1017 before the prison stuff, 1900rugrat, bfb da packman, cash cobain, babyfxce e, Babyface ray, popsmoke, spottemgottem (at least for 1 song), lil baby, Roddy rich, polo g, ice spice, meg the stallion, blp kosher, certified trapper, gunna

Pretty damn lacking and I regularly listen to none of it but they still broke out

And obviously the lists of the current rage stuff already posted here. Slayr and che are pretty undeniable, nettspend, all the opium ones that got big, etc

Idk about it in the grand scheme of it but some of the dj smokey affiliate rappers to a point

Rxknephew, Edward skeletrix, brenan Jones almost (lmao), bleeod, 2slimey, nine vicious

Some Milwaukee dudes doing big numbers lately too. Some Detroit guys got close to Babyface e but lost momentum
