Wasn't this already confirmed on KTT1? I remember someone made a thread years ago revealing his really small YouTube channel at the time and questioned how Travis possibly discovered him and signed him.

as someone who knows people in the industry a lot of times loose connections or random messages and interactions can help get your hands in the right people. i know someone that cold DM'd someone that worked with Juicy J and he was able to get more work in the industry off that

According to KTT an industry plant is anyone that gets pushed by a label and doesn’t have a 100% independent grassroots come up over the course of 6 years

industry plant is more the industry creating someone and putting them in front of everyone rather than an existing artist getting the right looks or whatever. like olivia rodrigo is an industry plant bc she transitioned from being on high school musical to working with producers and writers to make quality music and the label used their reach and her disney fame to make it big. she wasn't putting out music for years before that then got it in the right hands who wanted to work with her and have her music reach a wider audience. it's a difference between the machine creating someone and the machine putting their resources behind an existing artist

But how can you be an industry plant if you’re already established in the industry? She was on Disney Channel for like 6 years before she started doing music lol that’s not an industry plant.

how are we not at the point where we realize everyone an industry plant yet

    nope

everyone is industry backed. some are industry backed from the very start of their comeup (yeat + zack bia, for example) but this does not make said artist a plant.

What actually distinguishes a plant from a regular artist is how much say the label/management has in the artist's creative direction. In other words, if "you" (ur artistic persona) is more a product of the industry machine than any individual creative vision, u count as a plant.

90% of Internet Money related artists are plants. I'd include Don Toliver, yeah.

Industry plant isn’t even a bad thing. Labels try to plant an artist but in the end it’s up to consumers to decide if they like them. Not all plants are successful

    nah

the merits by which we define industry plant are arbitrary, and I haven’t seen an accusation about a relevant artist that can’t be applied to every other artist in the game.

    Okay let’s get into it.

We all know how difficult it is to get signed to a major label contract. You don’t define a plant as someone who slides into a deal based on relationships?

Artists should be signed based on their music since that’s the product they’re selling. If someone is signed because of their relationship to a label or artist then there’s some Tom-foolery going on. You should be able to see why people don’t respect that.

    i said relevant artists

if the music isn’t good, they won’t last. it’s kinda ridiculous to call someone with a huge fanbase an industry plant under the assumption that they were signed for reasons outside of musical quality, even if they do have preexisting relationships

Don Toliver was on one of the lost anticipated albums in the last decade. After previously being unknown. He gained his fanbase directly from a more famous artist. Also his music is very average. Half the kids in Toronto or LA are making music like that.

i guess that makes sense, that’s just not usually how i see this term used

also seems silly to call toliver an internet money-related artist without creative control… did they produce a single song on his album? i don’t know every single member, but it doesn’t look like it
