they were almost certainly asiatic and/or similar to mesopotamian, the only reason we know they weren't the same as africans elsewhere on the continent is that there is clear racial differentiation between the ancient egyptians and the nubians, and we basically know the racial/genetic makeup of nubians.

My understanding (I could be wrong) is that the Hamitic theory wasn't completely confirmed, and the origin of the Hamite theory (as a racial classification) altogether was an European attempt at sub-categorizing classifications of race.
The reception of Hamites as "black" (in the american sense of the word black) i don't think developed basically until the 1900s with people like Elijah Muhammad...prior to that they were considered asiatics. The problem with discussing race regarding anything with asiatic lineage is they just don't fit into the european racial classifications. Like Berbers are technically Asiatic but are more white than south-europeans, whereas many Cushitic people are super dark complexion. - Nov 17, 2021hyphen
