Tha Doggfather (1996)
One of the messiest yet most fascinating album releases of all time. I'll start by making it clear this is actually a good album. People were so disappointed at the time of its release because they expected something similar to his classic debut. But instead of trying to live up to the expectations Snoop just dropped the most effortless album he could. This could be a result of the departure from perfectionist Dr. Dre, but the sound of this album is hard funk throughout without him, this album is actually amazing sonically and there's no beat you can single out and call wack on it.
Snoop's rapping is more laid back but it's still prime Snoop and the feats compliment him well, however the songwriting definitely isn't memorable and there are no immediate hits, rather some music to sit back, smoke and reflect to. At times Snoop shows that he has matured when he says he doesn't find it cool to be a gangsta anymore and wants kids not to follow his path. This is not the album people wanted from Snoop at the time but I think it has aged well. In 2022 rap listeners are more open minded about how rap songs can be structured so an album like Tha Doggfather would be perceived better.
7/10

Vapors
Groupie
2001
Wake Up (O.J.)
Snoop's Upside Ya Head

If he cut out the rest, with better mixing, it would've been a solid 8/10 album imo
I also know he left out some loosies that were his best songs from that era smh
Album is a either a 6/10 or a 7/10 for me, I'll make up my mind as I delve deeper into his discog and see how it stands comparatively
