Woah. kinda ridiculous this song is from 84, it could easily have been from 10 years later (minus the hair and clothes)
even tho whites steal music from black culture 99% of the time
this is kinda revisionist story, she didn't invent the genre, it was more her guitarist husband that created the style and knew she was a church singer so asked her to sing in the band before they got married
fun fact, Kurt Cobain was their Roadie, and their drummer later joined Pearl Jam
they didn't became famous not because she was black, thats an absolute lie, on the contrary they had a lot of labels fighting for them, but they decided to stay small and independent
also a great fact Tina and Martin had a son, TJ Martiin who won an Oscar for best documentary with the movie Undefeated in 2012
what about the other band members
grunge is almost more of a scene than an actual solidifed sound, so its a bit harder to say that someone "invented" it before the scene. not to knock this band because this actually sounds good but I don't hear more "grunge" in this than other 80s punk bands like Wipers other than the fact that they're from Seattle.
we can just call them a cool unknown underground punk band with a black frontwoman instead of trying to rewrite history. thanks for sharing them tho, I'm gonna check out some more songs
what about the other band members
You’re right. She wasn’t the only member and definitely not the only one who contributed to inventing the sound, so I changed OP title
But it’s definitely a grunge band that made grunge music
Song in OP sounds like something I'd hear on Unknown Pleasures or Closer
It's the drummer from Soundgarden/Pearl Jam
