T-Pain says he took Jay-Z's “D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)” as a personal diss because he saw himself as "the face of Auto-Tune" at the time. Pain discussed his reaction to the classic track during a new interview on the Drink Champs podcast.
“Of course! A wise man once said, ‘You can’t knock the hustle,’” T-Pain said when asked by Co-host N.O.R.E. whether he thought the track was a diss was he first heard it. “I’m the face of this. Just like Lil Yachty was the face of mumble rap—anytime somebody talk about mumble rap, Lil Yachty was the first person to come up. I was the face of Auto-Tune. Anytime somebody said, ‘Auto-Tune,’ I’m the face. So, when you say Auto-Tune is wack, I’m the face.”
He continued: “If I woulda said f***in’ blue Yankees are terrible, everybody woulda been like, ‘Oh you dissin’ Jay-Z now?’ … Anytime Jay says something is wack, it’s trash.”

Jay z came across like a lame ass hater on that song. Old guy who doesn’t understand why something Is popular so he has to degrade and diminish it to feel better about himself.
Same way he tried to have niggas rocking button ups and platinum
It probably was but Hov was/is too much of a hip hop politician to publicly admit that.
So, he started acting like it was mostly aimed at T Pain's imitators instead of T Pain himself to ease things off.
But notice how Hov had no smoke for other autotuned rappers after T Pain fell off. Makes you wonder.
Lil Yachty was the face of mumble rap? 🤨🤨 #getthestrap
I always felt it was aimed at the artist imitating him. It's easy to say he was just hating now but a lot of people shared the same sentiment because a lot of rappers were using it poorly at the time.
Has Hov ever used it himself?
The line “And f*** that Autotune cus we on” on On To The Next One sounds like it
Also the intro to put on remix sounds like it

Right. There were also the 808 sessions where iirc, Kanye and Jay-Z were making fun of T-Pain for using auto tune. Ye makes 808s and then Jay drops DOA.
