I have spent a year at UVA and I was told that i couldn’t pursue my intended major in CS. I transferred into UVA with the maximum amount of credits, so I’m considered a 4th year and only have a limited amount of time to graduate.

The dean had me switch to a major called “cognitive science” and I strongly dislike it. I transferred in from a CC with a 4.1 gpa and all gen eds completed.

I applied for and was accepted to JMU for Spring 2024 but if I were to transfer, I’d be starting over and it would take me at least five semesters to graduate from JMU in CS. My schedule would be full of cs coursework which would be challenging and the major is application based and not guaranteed.

I don’t know whether to transfer out of UVA, finish a major I dislike, or try to go find a new major.

Just go to an online school and knock that s*** out, nobody cares about the status of the school you went to anymore unless you’re gonna be a doctor or something

I don’t think you should finish a major you don’t believe in! if you can afford it, an extra couple semesters in the long run of your entire life is nothing and is better than 30 years of regret! Also congrats on your gpa!

Do everything you can to get into a computer related field, it doesn’t have to be CS it can be I.T. Or Information Systems

I would NOT just suck it up & get a degree in something that is not your passion, you’re just setting yourself up to be even more miserable down the road at a job you dislike with a career you aren’t interested in.

Do everything you can to try & get back into anything computer related, you will be much happier down the road & save a s*** ton of money by not having to re enroll in school again

You’re never trapped, you almost always have a choice. It’s going to be tough, but I think you should do what you know is right and something you’d be happier with in the long run

Why is he having u switch to major not even adjacent to the field you want to be in ?

He couldn't switch u to any data science, IT, Electrical and computer engineering or just a straight up computer engineering field

There's absolutely NO point in graduating with a major you don't like. If you can't decide which major to do id suggest doing something else for a while. College degrees are only as helpful as your passion and resume are and in a field like CS youll want to be pretty much spotless cus it's competitive as f*** out here

  • Nov 13, 2023

Before you switch tho have you done a lot of actual coding?

  • Nov 13, 2023

Lmao anyone suggesting you go back for 4 more years is a buffoon

  • You could definitely swing a cognitive science degree to a UX Design/Research job if you have front-end/web design skills on the side

I'm using financial aid and I'm pretty sure if I add extra semesters I risk running out of aid. I'm not sure how much ive used so far but I def can't pay out of pocket.

I contacted JMU and since I would be transferring with over 70 credits, I would only have CS classes. That means my schedule would be challenging. The admission into CS also isn't guaranteed. I'm just wondering what if transfer to JMU, take the cs classes, and then im not accepted into the major?
