What is tread?

Tread is a subgenre of hiphop, and more specifically trap, anchored by Philadelphian production team Working On Dying. The scene consists mostly of Philadelphian artists like Matt OX, Five Finger Posse, and the aforementioned Working On Dying. Other major affiliates include Virginian couple Black Kray (aka Sickboyrari) and Bootychaaain, New York rapper Kane Groceries, Cleveland rapper CHXPO, and Swedish rapper Bladee. The genre had arisen in 2014 as Working On Dying and their affilites formed and began making music in Philidelphia. The scene is now considered mostly dead, beginning around the end of 2017 as Working On Dying moved to work with non-tread artists as they gained attention in the hiphop community. However, many artists either continue to make tread (Five Finger Posse) or have continued their careers in other scenes of hiphop to various degrees of success (Sickboyrari, Bladee, Matt ox)

What does tread sound like?

Tread beats are usually a form of trap music that usually consists of beats with a heavy low end and bassy sound in general. Most beats have a high BPM, ranging from 130bpm to as high as 190bpm. Additionally, many have high frequency electronic sounds that are trademarks of Working On Dying's sound. Good examples of this can be heard on Overwhelming by Matt OX, BVNDGXD by CHXPO, or Robo Coupe by Sub9k.
