first we had Sicko Mode — a mini-playlist that starts out with a Drake song that got cut from More Life, then the DJ got music ADHD & skipped to a Travis Scott ft. Swae Lee song halfway through, then that song ends & the mini-playlist ends with a Drake ft. Travis Scott song that got cut from Scorpion, with nothing tying the three songs together sonically or thematically
now we have Life Is Good — a mini-playlist that starts out with a Drake solo song then ends with a Future solo song that also had nothing tying it to the Drake song
is this a new marketing tactic born because of the streaming era?
I understand you’re trying to create a new term with “mini-playlist” but it’s not gonna catch on bro

They’ve been doing mini playlists for centuries. But they called it a beat switch back in the old days

beat switches have transitions
this is more along the lines of the hidden track format, except people would acknowledge they were separate songs back in the old days

Sicko mode had plenty of transitions

zoom in on them. they go silent for a split second before starting each new song. they’re not transitions, they’re outros. transitions would lead into the next song

The first switch qualifies as a true transition for sure. Just cause it’s a quick silence doesn’t mean it’s not a transition, they’re pretty seamless. Also Sicko Mode wasn’t released as a single

nope, not even that one. there’s a very clear silence between the two that makes it clear that it’s not a beat switch. there’s a 4-beat intro to the second song like how Pharrell starts his beats, which is just good track listing on the mini-playlist

Nah you’re wrong

also, yes it was released as a post-album single

oh thanks for clarifying
A split second of silence doesn’t mean what you think it means. It’s like a drop. As long as the beat switch comes in on beat then it’s a transition

if i play two random, unrelated songs back to back but the beats flow together nicely bc of the timing, that doesn’t make it a beat switch. the only difference is with Sicko Mode & Life Is Good, you can’t hit rewind or skip to the previous or next song automatically. beat switches require overlapping transitions at the bare minimum. like Grammys is clearly two completely different songs spliced together, but there’s an overlapping transition, so it’s technically considered a beat switch
That Future and Kendrick song from Black Panther kinda fits too
James Blake singing is a transition

that’s more in the form of a hidden track though, since on Jay Rock’s album, that outro is cut out
Never heard sicko mode in full. This is my first time experiencing this 'method' with this new song. This s*** is messy af 🚮. How is this a thing

It doesn’t need to overlap and usually beat switches don’t

name one thing besides “they’re both rapping” that sonically or thematically ties them together. different subject matters. different vocalists. different flows. different producers. they were just mastered together & exported as one song. it’s basically like dropping a song with hidden tracks as a single but without a huge gap between the songs

bc spotify users never heard a beat switch before listening to Rodeo so they don’t get why it’s not a real beat switch
