tbh i think the weimar public comparisons are a bit over-generalized and a closer comparison might be the Spanish Civil War especially since it was like fascists, nationalists, monarchists, theocrats, etc. who all loosely banded together vs an even looser collection of liberals, anarchists, communists, etc. (who likely wouldn't have been on the same side had there not been a mutual interest in defeating the opposition) and there was also significant foreign interest in the civil war. The lead into the Spanish Civil War was symbolic of so many things (religion vs secularity, revolution vs counter-revolution, class warfare, etc.) and the background leading up to it i think is a more apt comparison too
the reason i prefer the weimar one is because
a) we are in the 20s again
b) more or less sudden economic depression had a huge role in it whereas the spanish civil war had more structural reasons
c) center-left and right collaborating against far-left bites the center-left back in the ass laterthe parties aren't obviously the same, there is no large communist or anarchist movement in the USA.
but i can see where you're coming from.
basically i expect a much more unstable USA in the 2020s than in the 2010s.

basically i expect a much more unstable USA in the 2020s than in the 2010s.While there are no "real" communist or anarchist movements in the US, (the same way there are no "real" fascists - at least none of the actual Mussolini, Evola, Weininger, etc. variety), there are people who align along a vague division of left/right which is more closely tied to how they think society should be structured, and then within those divisions there's in-fighting which is solved only by their mutual hatred of the "other" side of the division.
While I wouldn't disagree over the economic thing, I would note even the handling of economic issues in modern times in the US is a front for a wider cultural debate which has subsumed even economic issues here. The economy is creating the conditions for further radicalization for sure, but if even during extreme economic decline people are still debating over culture war issues, it does kind of lean into the culture war stuff having a level of latent importance.

You can look at a state like Brazil where the spectacle is so strong that a complete economic failure under Bozonaro gets ignored whereas a slight downturn under Dilma was the reason for national protests. America of course has even more sophisticated propaganda and is better at it than the rest of the world. I guarantee you will see Trumptards who are far more angry at this Twitter thing than anything related to the pandemic going on.
Nonetheless, I do think that at one point, material reigns over ideas. There's only so much economic hardship people can endure before going ape s***. While it's an exaggeration, "no society is more than three missed meals away from a revolution" comes to my mind.
As I've stated before, my prediction is that the next populist figure will be a right-winger with vaguely socialist rhetoric á la Tucker Carlson. Someone who will advocate for pro-life, pro-guns, anti-immigration, pro-Christianity and champion himself as a hero of the workers. It will have both the culture war elements you mentioned as well as enough concessions to the people that they could gain popularity from people on the fence.
