Okay, real talk, why do I feel like The Americans constantly gets snubbed when it comes to discussions about the best series of the 2010s?
Because this series thus far might just be the best example of the espionage thriller genre I think I’ve ever seen.

what do you think the best way to form your taste in movies is?
i feel like with music it was very easy for me to figure out what I loved and was inspired by but with movies it feels like while I watch a lot of great movies I don't find myself particularly moved by a certain director genre or era and I would like to find more obscure films

You just described the best way to find your aesthetic and said it did nothing for you, so maybe you just don’t like movies that much? It didn’t take me watching that many films before I knew horror was my favorite genre, even as a child, and still to this day, after seeing a little over 4000 films, it still is. Most of the filmheads I know base their “taste” after having seen enough stuff to pick and choose from those and just make it their aesthetic. You probably don’t care about movies superficially enough for s*** like this to even be relevant to you, it’s usually just for weirdos who obsess over it

like any other thing you are getting into, you really just watch what everyone is recommending and after a point, you are able to determine what appeals to you and you're able to seek that out
Like for me at this point, I will still check out movies that are regarded as amazing but I also end up watching a number of movies that sound interesting to me from the synopsis even if they have mixed reception or people don't like.
