@FlyHiii because u picked up that 3 y/o discussion lol, let's rather continue here because I don't want to spam that comment box.

I honestly need to watch that film again some time, dunno if I'd still hate it. I've def learned to appreciate exploitation more since, but violence is still a tricky thing to portray imo. Even leaving cursed endlessly self-reproducing images of violence with misogynistic or racist undercurrents out of it, a lot of the time it's just very complicated.

Honestly in Tarantino films I've grown very tired of violence for example, the way it just becomes an aesthetic and becomes this "cinematic" thing.

I overall def find it off-putting how much of a part overt violence and aggression play in American popular culture, and I tend to see that as an extension of a culture with a deeply institutionalized belief in violence as a productive means of change, which also in my mind seems to play along with how much of a status the idea of war as a good and important and honorable thing still has. You can even see how much aggression becomes sexualized and violence becomes a sort of "orgasm" in American cinema. All of it gives off weird vibes to me

It's not about being able to handle violence at all for me, I can watch horror, Jodorowsky, whatever and am not going to be very shocked about it, but I've come to a point where especially Tarantino-style violence just mindlessly used as an aesthetic feels like an uncritical reproduction of highkey problematic cultural values.

I'm not entirely strict with this either, some films are incredibly dumb and incredibly violent and I might love them and find them hilarious, but there still if all of it just gives off homophobic or misogynist vibes for example it prolly leaves a bad aftertaste for me or ends up being completely off-putting to me. It's for me always about what you're left with in terms of what a scene presented to you tbh. And in many cases that's def often a matter of interpretation (honestly I'm still not sure how I feel about violence in Jodorowsky films for example, also feels very aestheticized in a weird way).

That's all talking about the US now of course because that's the best example to illustrate my point, but every country got its own problematic cultural images. I honestly don't even wanna discuss Battle Royale tho before I rewatch it

Damn, you went in depth, almost makes me feel like i can’t reply right away because i don’t want to disrespect your effort

But yeah man, i get it but don’t share the same sentiment. Not sure if i would be able to tell you why i don’t get triggered when violence is used for mere aesthetic reasons, i just don’t. People know by now that i’m a huge Takashi Miike fan, he utilizes violence in the same way QT does (you could even say Tarantino ripped off his style but that’s another discussion): that being a mix of shock and release in the form of

The fact that this kind of violence (the sort that QT & Miike portray a lot) is so over the top, cartoon-y and unrealistic makes it enjoyable to me. The more over the top it is, the less i’m inclined to over-analyze the violence and to walk away from it with a conflicted feeling

Have to say though, when violence becomes of sexual nature i become a lot more strict towards the filmmaker and his justification for including it

I cant watch shows with more than 3 seasons, I always start hype but end up dropping s*** when it becomes routine

with that in mind, can anyone recommend me some good miniseries or something ongoing with less than 3 seasons like the boys or witcher??

Honestly couldn't even tell you, literally thousands probably I've been using that for like 6 years now and it's my primary resource to look up any director or actor or film tbh. I like that it shows you most films in a chronological order but you can also sort by number of ratings or rating avg. Honestly just the artist pages with the chronological view and seeing directly which film got how many ratings and how high of a score really helped me get a getting a grip on film history tbh

Ratings/rankings are easily the most reliable of any site with ratings imo, though sometimes new mainstream films got heavily inflated ratings. I really like that you often find more obscure films relatively high in a chart because of a high average.

I dunno, def heard of Eureka (2000) on there first, now got a poster of that in my room. I heard of Mindgame on there first and Yuasa is one of my favorite directors now... P sure I was first intrigued by the Eraserhead poster on there as well which led to me blind-buying that and eventually becoming a Lynch stan lol. First heard of Bela Tarr and Tarkovsky through the top 100... Too many things to list. The influence goes deep lol

This is gonna sound like a dumb question.
When it comes to rating or sorting out movies. How do you rate them?

As an example i watched The Lighthouse.
I quite enjoyed it, but upon rewatching it and reading about it, i came to appreciate it more.
I learned about certain mythological themes that i didnt know at first viewing.
So that means i enjoyed it more with more than the movie alone, out of its length of content.

Of course there is no need to rate anything, but its just a question that i asked myself when thinking about film in that way.

real ones know the very back middle seats in the theater are the best seats in the house

I don’t get ppl who choose to sit in the the front.. literally the worst place you could sit

I get why ppl would think sitting in the middle of the theater might be the best spot but IMO the middle still way too close to the screen + it’s just ppl all around you + you can’t smoke weed pen w/o the smoke getting in the way of ppl sitting behind you
