relistening to vessel is like "wait... was it this mid and cringe the entire time" and the answer is yes
What's funny is Tyler during the 10th Anniversary stream for Vessel was clearly so embarrassed/over those songs. He was clearly grateful, but they listened to old demos/videos of him singing and he was like
Lean with it rock with it when we gonna stop with it
Absolutely absurd that such a beautiful bridge transitions into this
Lean with it rock with it when we gonna stop with it
you are surrounding.... all of my surroundings.

That's not that bad compared to the line you're replying to lol
This relisten is making me want a Vessel redux version, reworked to sound more mature. There's so much gold mixed in with the garbage here

I actually fully agree. With some tweaking of the lyrics/vocals/production, it'd be a fire album.
But enough about Vessel,
Listened to "Backslide" and they're 3/3
Don't want to get high hopes for this album just to be disappointed, but all 3 of these singles rule.

I've listened twice and I enjoyed it Probably my least favorite of the three, but this album is shaping up to be great.

People were saying it was their least favorite, but I just listened twice and I'm kinda shocked at how consistent all 3 have been in terms of quality without being consistent at all in genre.

Yeah this really seems like a return to form. I was surprised at the "Kinda wishing that I never did Saturday" lyric.

They knew SAI would be going against the grain which is why they made the "lore" fit the idea that it wasn't as important, but I think they didn't prep for the album to....not be good lol

Such a misstep to release that after dropping your first all around great album

Joseph talked about it in the Zane Lowe interview about SAI. He said a lot of his decisions are about compensating (lol) for the previous success/failures.
Trench was the first time he self-produced after BF was overproduced and he avoided radio hits after the successes of Blurryface, but he wanted to avoid the darkness and self-introspection from Trench during the recording of SAI (which happened during COVID). I feel like Clancy is in-line with that while also being aware that that hasn't always rewarded them.
Finished the Vessel relisten. Definitely a nostalgia trip, but it was much worse than I remember Semi Automatic and Trees are probably the only songs that don't have major issues. The biggest gems with issues are Ode To Sleep, Holding On To You, and Guns For Hands. Ode To Sleep is incredible in some ways but suffers from the dates raps. Holding On To You has that truly awful bridge, and the Guns For Hands reggae section nearly ruins the song.
Also listening to Kitchen Sink rn, and the chorus is absolutely gorgeous, but the rap verses man...

Enjoying Backslide a lot more on my third listen
I'm sure going from Vessel to this is quite the jump lmao
