I ended up falling in love with TP anyway
the first and last parts of the second season is what really made me a fan
S3 takes Frost/Lynch to new heights
S3 takes Frost/Lynch to new heights
And they take f***ing TELEVISION to new heights
damn Iâm reading the initial reports about Wisteria. They said back then that itâs 25 episodes, all an hour long
the return energy.
Itâs all a big mystery, but TP cast members have been posting hints that theyâre involved which makes it seem like it will be
If they f*** around & keep going
Question but no spoilers please
So all i've got to see for TP is The Missing Pieces & The Return, everything else i've seen just a heads up
Why is The Return so divisive???? On here people mostly say it's peak Lynch. On Letterboxd it's all 5 star reviews and even a lot of people saying its their ''favorite piece of media ever created''. But on every other part of the internet there seems to be a lot of people who absolutely hated The Return
Now i know a lot of David Lynch work is divisive, and since i love them all i'm not really anxious how much i'm gonna like it, but i am interested in hearing what yall think made it as divisive as it is. Again, no spoilers.
How can a group of peoples opinions be so vastly different, ranging from it's the best thing ever made to it's so boring i couldn't sit through it ? Surely by now TP fans have seen FWWM and realized the more abstract direction it's about to go? Surely David Lynch fans kinda know what to expect from a Lynch project?
Was it just mainly the fans of the OG series that didn't like the Return?
edit: also do y'all suggest reading into it after every few episodes? Or should i just let it watch over me the first time? I normally like to read into stuff a little bit at least. It helped for FWWM, because that was the first part of TP where i actually started to feel super confused

i feel like a good way to put the return, is it really feels like twin peaks 25 years later. it doesn't try to recreate the exact charm of the og run, but instead really feel like an evolution of the world. it does such an incredible job of fan service, without it being cheap/easy.
the return at times really feels like a different show from twin peaks. which can be a hard pill to swallow for fans of one of the most beloved show runs oat, but it's the only way the return could've happened tbh.
also, i think people could easily feel like it's lynch being a bit self indulgent at times. but theyre wrong lynch goes off

But i mean, FWWM didn't feel like TP to me at all either. Characters didn't really act like they did in the show already (best example being Cooper who didn't seem as upbeat). I would assume people who go into season 3 as fans of the original had also seen the prequel movie. Were those people just so naive to think it would all go back to the happy dreamplace we saw in S1&2, even after that finale and movie?
that's just interesting to me
There's some melancholy in knowing that The Return is the only thing by Lynch i have yet to see

donât read into anything until after you seeen the whole thing i BEG you
i say this everytime i try to
explain this season to someone whose watches TP but not the return
it is not something i enjoy watching. i watch s1 and 2 frequently bc itâs a comfort watch. s3 isnât like that at all. thereâs only a few select episodes that work outside the context of the show, but i personally wouldnât watch it.
because of this, it takes a LOT of patience. itâs essentially like a 18 hour + movie.
to explain my âi donât enjoy watchingâ is because itâs an exercise in patience. thereâs plenty of scenes that lead nowhere and have u wondering âwhat does it mean, how does this connectâ and it will never ever make sense. and thatâs okay. thatâs all apart of the ride.
thereâs so many scenes that are just so weird and mets that will completely break you from the illusion, but on my 2nd watch iâm realizing itâs very intentional. youâll have a goofy ass scene one minute and then the next youâre completely on the edge of your seat.
itâs got the camp of the original all over it, yet is far darker at times than FWWM and even Blue Velvet.
as someone who loves films and is constantly searching for things that can push the boundaries of what âfilmâ is, this is the quintessential experience for that.
iâm so mad bc thereâs this movie that i think everyone should watch before this. itâs about a prositute and itâs got like no action, itâs just her doing everyday things. i wish i knew the name, but i think itâs good prep for what this series is like. it has a lot of great cinematic moments, dialogue, whatever. but my favorite moments as i grow older, is just seeing the people of the town do regular s***. meth heads battlr addiction. janitors owners sweep the floors. trailer park people just be... crazy trailer park people.
it finally feels like lynch embraces the term âlynchianâ more so than this series. he really does capture the tension between the mundane and the supernaturals/occult/uncanny here.

i disagree it feels like the first time lynch is self indulgent. he calls back to his old movies, his cinematic influences, and just embraces all the aesthetics that makes david, david.
and i f***ing love it.
i can def see how someone can be turned off by it, but heâs such a special mind. if he passes prematurely and this is the last big creative project we have from him, i believe it is the perfect swan song to an incredible career

Interesting
Well i for sure already was planning to go into this knowing itâs very different from the OG run and even FWWM
But just seeing all the praise the 3rd season got makes it hard for me to not get too hype, as someone who loves all his work pretty much

embrace the hype
part of the series is playing with ur expectations. if you didnât have expectations, a lot of it wouldnât be as impactful imo
itâs a great show man, if you want iâd love to watch with you! i finally am giving it a rewatch after not having watched it since it originally broadcasted back in 2017 (wow how time flies)
let me know when you get to episode 3 and we can like keep each other up to date and talk about our reactions
iâll keep it spkiler free of course

Yeah that would be dope, i'm watching with my gf who has severe migraines though so i might be watching on an irregular basis so hopefully that doesn't bother you too much. I will def update in this thread anyway like how i did when watching the other TP stuff recently
I love going back & forth discussing his work. Actually i NEED to because his films always seem to stay in the back of my mind like no other
I'll have to show my gf the season 2 finale and FWWM tomorrow and then hopefully i'll be able to start The Return somewhere this weekend
I'll post itt when i start

true true i see what you mean. i guess i more so meant that it doesn't detract anything from the show, but actually enhances it
it's like if you're not 100% on board with lynch's vision/twin peaks as a whole by the time you get to the return, the season probably isn't gonna work for you
man it's only been a little over a month since i watched and i think im ready for a rewatch lol
i watched it way too fast tbh
lets just discuss back and forth no stress
