If a song supposedly had such a profound cultural impact and was so universally beloved for its authenticity in its era, but the gut reaction to it decades later by a generation entirely removed from its original cultural context is disgust, that falls on the song, not the generation or “the culture” shifting. The youngsters are obsessed with nostalgia and hauntology. There might be a reason their only engagement with this specific musical movement has been ridicule.
