Tbh, in the books he got "into" politics due to his mother and grandparents.

Later on in Occidental college he met people who came from different backgrounds that had real reasons to be politically aware and this in combination with the civil rights activist at the time inspired him to get more involved in researching and studying politics after he transferred to Columbia College.

The stuff about the girls was just to mention how despite having an inkling of political belief, he didnt really have many grounded positions at the time and in retrospect he probably just did it because it was hip at the time. Not to say he didnt feel that way but he didnt really have any grounded basis for it

I was going off the original twitter posts saying he was using leftist ideologies to pick up women and nothing more. It's clear today that he doesn't align with any leftist beliefs so it's easy to believe that story and also believe that at the time he was a sheep.
