How is it manipulative in any way besides the general manipulative nature of marketing? It’s marketing lol

No one was duped, all his fans said right away when the covers changed that the rollout is starting. You didn’t know the covers existed so you don’t really know enough to speak on all this. I assume you also don’t know that since 2011 Tyler has dropped an album every 2 years in spring or early summer (2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, now 2021 soon), it’s actually not that mysterious because we all know exactly when it’s coming and have had the calendar marked for a minute

it was obviously the start of the roll out, nothing was deceitful in terms of whether or not it was a roll out start. the fact that I didnt know the covers were old also is a testament to the fact that many people would not know the same. of course I think all marking starters are manipulative I just feel like it would be nicer to the fans that instead of doing cryptic things like this maybe tweet something or reveal a song snippet

if you have fans foaming at the mouth for new music they would probably much a prefer something like a song or at least a snippet or a tweet rather than teasing them like this

When you call the number it’s literally a song snippet lol it’s just a little more creative than a tweet

I didnt listen to it I thought it was some conversation between his mom and him. if there was a snippet I think that's pretty cool. I don't see how you can deny the album covers were a ploy though considering I literally heard people in the thread about it talking about how the new covers were making them bump the album heavy. maybe it would be better to have started with the billboard that contained the snippet. I just think the album cover change was kinda lame, changing an album cover instead of tweeting something is stupid and there are so much more respectable tactics that could be used

I feel like you’re overstating the impact of the cover change too, people in the thread talked about it but it’s not like it was some huge ploy lol no one outside of ktt and Reddit noticed

I have no idea how big the impact was, but if Tyler wants to try to start a buzz I think he should engage with the fans. I don't think the album cover was a great move as a way to start people talking. considering the new information I take back what I said about Tyler being pretentious through this tactic and thinking he was tricking people with a pseudo artistic vision. I just think it would be more respectable to have just tweeted if he really wanted to kickstart some hype

This is all just pre rollout laying the groundwork quietly, the real hype will come soon. His fans aren’t pressed because we know it’s coming so it’s not the same as when other artists tease and make us wait

there is no doubt the cover changes were just the beginning. and there is no doubt that he would deliver the album. I just don't see how changing a couple old album covers a week before the billboard was the best move. it was lazy and easy for him to do that and just feels cheap to me. yes they are old covers but there are so many casual fans that don't know that. I just don't see it as a good move because it really didnt amount to anything. I think the billboard should have been the very beginning.
