Realistically there's always been way too much to unpack and answer because of how little we (the public and the government) know at this moment. We'd need to receive actual confirmation first and foremost if these are in fact extraterrestrials tied to these crafts and phenomenon.

But to skip all of that for now and go with it, it's just unclear.

Research purposes or just simple observation due to their curiosity would be my guess.

They aren't doing anything too explicitly bold to interact with us (disregarding abduction stories or sightings for now), so I don't think they'd know a lot of our worldly politics enough to decide whether it's our current state of living, morals and rules that turns them away from making that leap with direct contact. We'd need evidence of that to begin with if they are paying attention to that kind of stuff.

I personally believe that we're just a fish tank to them.

this is blowing my mind rn. Completely was forgetting the part about foreign antigens introduced by alien encounters and the implications of something like this for humanity as a species...

I only think that now because until whatever information that will soon be released is revealed, there's just so little to go off of. I'd prefer not trying to apply how we think to what a possible they might think because it'd involve imposing a logic we're used to in a way that fits with something entirely different, if that makes sense.

Even if they are lightyears ahead of us with understanding foreign concepts and such of the world, I've yet to see anything confirm just how uniform they are as a whole outside of sparse sightings (although there have been collective objects working in tandem, but I'm still a bit unsure).

It will be interesting to see just how connected these things are soon.

Going off of the idea that sightings could be connected to one organization, imagine there being an actual galactic confederacy and we're being monitored for potential involvement.
