I just don't see the point of Judas and the Black Messiah The movie feels like it tries to get the audience to sympathize with William O Neal by showing how Jesse Plemons' character manipulated him by inviting him over to his house, taking him out to nice restaurants etc. Like he was a victim too. But then its like they want to show us Jesse Plemons' character is not such a bad guy after all because he shows resistance towards killing Fred and gets manipulated by Hoover Daniel Kaluuya felt stiff and unnatural, like I could tell he was acting. Not sure how Fred Hampton spoke, but Ima check out some speeches. Daniel made him seem kinda condescending in how he spoke. The romance with Dominique also felt so forced, no chemistry at all. Lakeith deserves more praise for his acting in this than Daniel imo

As someone who is unfamiliar with the civil rights era other than Malcolm X, the movie didn't inform me of much about the Black Panthers and it seems like most of the movie didn't actually occur and was just added for dramatic effect. I just don't get why it was made, what were they hoping the audience would gain from watching it

culture has changed so much since then. Whole movie basically about trying to date rape high school girls.

Idk if I didn’t realise this in 2007 or it just didn’t matter

It was made to white wash & mythologize Fred Hampton while also giving you a neither sides are bad angle.

you can’t trust hollywood with stories about Black revolutionaries. bootlickers can keep making the argument that films are not supposed to be educational or be a realistic depiction of someone’s life which is true but it’s also not a film’s job to be full propaganda.

How the hell did you walk away with “neither side is wrong” after watching Black Messiah? It very clearly depicts how insidious the FBI was in their dismantling of leaders of black organizations/movements.

that doesn't excuse any of it tho, there was a time when Black directors had integrity and would fight to get their films financed just to give you their vision in it's rawest form. New Black Hollywood is happy to give you these stories in a way that doesn't trigger white liberal audiences because it gets them paid.

Charles Burnett can't get any of his films financed because he's considered too "eccentric" by white studio execs. meanwhile hacks Lena Waithe or Jordan Peele are given complete freedom to make whatever film they want because white liberals feel educated after watching their work & they give black liberals the illusion of experiencing "progressive" "prestige" black cinema.

yeah everyone knows and it was soft criticism. It was enough for white liberals to see the commentary being made against them and be like “oh we’re really like that?” without feeling offended. white liberals could walk away from the film feeling like they’ve been educated and it almost feels as if that was the movie’s entire purpose which tbh is kinda gay as s***

anyways movie had none of the edge of watermelon man which better explored some of the same themes without feeling as if it was tailored made for white liberal understanding.

or just make movies for black people. not movies for white liberal understanding, we don’t need those types of films at all.

if you’ve made white people angry in the process then you’re doing something good.

While I still believe you just want him to start some s***, heres why what you're asking is unreasonable.

Jordan Peeles entire career has literally been comedy that's safe for white people lmao. He's not even 100% black, he identifies as mixed race iirc and was raised by a white woman. I remember him talking about this in one of his stand ups too.
So I don't know why you'd expect him to suddenly write something that's for us (no pun intended) and then piss off white liberals.

Look at Key and Peele and compare it to Chappelle Show. Both hilarious shows, but one of them goes further than the other and one plays it more safe. In fact iirc that's why Chappelle left, because they wanted to go TOO far.

I think he's movies are fine just the way they are.

I'm not expecting or asking him to change, I know he's just a guy who simply uses his card as a Black person & knowledge of Black culture to appeal to white audiences in the same way Jeremy O. Harris & many of other new Black Hollywood creatives are doing so.

I was just making a point on why someone like Jordan Peele can get support from studios & critics while other Black creatives who are making Black content for Black audiences don't.

It's clear Hollywood doesn't want certain films getting made. just look at the reception for The Glass Shield compared to Blackkklansman or how Christopher St. John had to fight to get Top of the Heap made just for it to be forgotten in time. Both films deal with the subject of being a Black cop that isn't pure propaganda like Blackkklansman was.

but yeah I'm not expecting anything change, not as long as people keep gassing up these supposedly "prestige" & "progressive" post-BLM Black films.
