fromsoft is the best developer for the last 10 years
not an unpopular opinion at all tbh
probably the closest thing to an objective fact itt lmao
spoken exactly like someone who is mad they’re so f***ing trash at Souls games
you sound mad dumb right now cus ive beaten dark souls 3 and im playin through demon souls remake rn... i also played sekiro lmaoo

you played Sekiro and talmbout there’s no story?
the Souls games are way more cryptic and minimalist with their plots and lore, but coming to your own conclusions while playing and then reading other ppl’s interpretations is all part of the fun of em imo

na i said soul games for a reason not sekiro, im jus sayin i'm not trashin these games cus they hard.
yeah i dont find it fun having to read lore to learn the story i'd rather go read a book
Uncharted after the first one is trash
Last of Us trash
Ghosts of Tushishit trash
Spider Man trash

that’s fair
well said
i feel like we’re a few years away from that dream like vision of a truly free game and i’m sure rockstar will be the ones to do it
but for now i still think an immersive story is the best way to approach video games and like u said it involves a good amount of « hand holding »
i think mgs v against its predecessors is a good example of this tension between a great narrative and great gameplay
it has the best gameplay of the series no doubt but it’s obvious it had to sacrifice a lot of story. a lot of people just blamed it on industry drama and that’s real. but at the same time i don’t think people have enough empathy to the dev team who had to figure out how to make this clunky spy game with tons of lore translate into a modern video game experience. i feel like they did really well with the big expectations.
what’s most interesting about that game is that it actually integrated player choice with narrative with the casssette tapes. it was done really well, it’s obvious why he picked a big movie star and the best voice actors in the industry. the cassettes are really good and have a great incentive to make players find them and listen to them since there’s not many cutscenes. also so many people hated the long cutscenes !
i just don’t think players understand what they really want from video games.
It's tricky, I think BOTW is the only game so far to fulfil the potential of the open-world genre, the story, exploration, and gameplay are all woven in so well, it never stops being a game, there's always something to keep you engaged, and the lore feels like you're really recovering ancient relics to put the past together in your head
At the same time tho I prefer MGS4 to MGSV because of the story, even though the gameplay in V is insane, it just felt too empty in comparison and you could tell it was unfinished
I legit think devs should think about gameplay first and foremost and add a story that reflects the gameplay and is revealed in a manner as unobtrusive as possible, that's what FromSoft usually do and it works amazingly well, it's rare that game writers are as good as Kojima, I rarely have the patience for cutscene-heavy games these days

nah unfinished isn’t a good enough critique for me anymore
as a die hard kohima fan, ofc i empathize with him and his dev team and it’s always f*** konami
did his vision get fulfilled completely? obviously not
but to say that it’s an unfinished game? there’s obviously a finished product here for better and for worse. idk if more hours of cutscenes would have gave players the sense of fulfillment they wanted i’m sorry.
a third region would be cool but i still find new s*** in afghanistan and then remember that i haven’t even touched half of the african region outside of main missions
with so much story in the cassettes and just so much goddamn game in it idk it just seems like another case of players wanting more without knowing exactly what they want

I'm not saying my opinion's objective or anything, like I wish I got more out of it, but I definitely felt like something was missing when I beat it back in 2015, that was even before I found out about the whole Chapter 3 stuff
I played it again recently for the first time in years and it's probably the most immersive stealth game ever, but it just never fulfilled me in the way all the rest did, in a lot of ways I found RDR2 to be the game I wished MGSV was
This is just how I felt about it, but I found too much of it to be empty, a lot of the fields in Africa have nothing much going on, Mother Base is mostly just a model to walk around, it's still an amazing technical achievement though, the fact that it runs at 60fps on a base PS4 is insane

nah ur opinion ain’t objective i hope i didn’t come off as attacking
it just seems to be the popular opinion, one that i had, but i honestly enjoyed the game so much more these past years

It's chill man, I just worry sometimes about looking like I think my opinions are superior when really everything's subjective
Out of curiosity have you played the rest? I'm interested to hear what you think of them

dude don’t get me started
illl be honest i never finished 1 and 4 because of accessibility. never had a ps3 and my ps2 couldn’t play 1
never wanted to play twin snakes
i’m biased to 5 bc the trailer for 5 in 2013 is what made me a metal gear fan lol. i was happy for the delays bc it gave me the time to play 2/3. i was going through a big change in my life so 2/3 on my playstation 2 is my comfort games. what i love about them being my go to comfort games is that there’s so much to pick up on each playthrough. lord knows how many times ive played them.
but V is just a beast gameplay wise.
ive started 4 at least 3 times but it’s hard to get thru the desert part. i need to give it a better chance ik i’m missing out on so much, but idk
i get back to my house tonight u think i should actually try to finish 4 this time @Fries

Yeah dude! The story is unreal, best of the series, gameplay is insanely detailed too, the fact that it fit so much on PS3 is hard to believe, it originally ran at about 18fps on average due to how much is always going on at one time
I'd say it'd be best to complete MGS1 first but I'd get if you just wanna go forward with it
The PS3 is a MGS machine, you can play literally every single main series game from the original MSX Metal Gear to MGSV on it
Completely agree with 3 being a comfort game too, just feels so good to immerse yourself in the low-tech approach and figure out locations for yourself

yea i love going thru it without guides it’s insane how much the game can help you without making s*** obvious.
2/3 are basically the best puzzle games of all time for me lol
i love what u said about ps3 bc it’s how i feel about ps now. they removed mgs4 and i removed the subscription immediately. bought it again as soon as it came back. don’t mind paying $10 a month for mgs as dumb as that sounds it’s just how much i love the series

Nah I know what you mean man, the series has the best game story ever, didn't know that about PS Now, that's crazy, I legit thought 4 was gonna be stuck on the PS3 forever, like it's such a bizarrely put-together game I'm not even sure a Switch could run it these days
From what I've seen it looks like it might run slightly better too? I dunno tho, if it's just streaming from a PS3 then obviously not, but I never noticed the framerate affecting my enjoyment, and I played on a 480p TV back in the day

nah the framerate dips are there on top of streaming frame rates that vary depending on time of day for me

I hope one day Kojima and Konami can work something out and do some proper remasters man
A funny thing that impacts the gigantic size of MGS4 is Kojima insisting every sound had to be WAV quality, on the PS3 you had to watch Snake smoking for like 20 minutes while it installed a bunch of data to the console that was mainly just audio stuff

tbh i haven’t
played demon souls remake but i’m hype for the blue point remakes. i have faith. the devs seem pretty excited about it and if it was a cash grab i feel like they’d have announced it way before they felt confident in it
Last of Us 2 game of the generation
Red Dead 2 game of the generation

f***ing loved that game as a kid
